Cancellation charge for cancelling a policy! Was really surprised to hear when they hit me with this charge. Man, this company must really suck to charge customers for leaving them, glad I didn't have to find out hard way by filing a claim or something!

Lesson learned never ever again Progressive :thumbdown
</end rant>

On the other hand thanks to Lawrence at Addiction for mounting new tires even though I was half hour late.

I've never heard of such a thing from an insurance company. In fact, I am always sent a reimbursement check should I leave before the policy expires.

Did you owe them money, i.e. were you late on payments?

Many business's in the US now charge fees for what use to be the normal costs of operating a business. In your case, what would appear to be normal paper work in closing out an account, they're charging you for it. crazy. The airlines have gone off the deep end with this nonsense, which I think the learned from the government, specifically the DMV. They don't up their prices, so as not to immediately turn off the consumer, but then you get hit with fees and add-ons, and you're screwed.

Progressive sucks when trying to collect from them too, if they think they can put part of the blame on the one that didn't cause the accident. We had to get a lawyer to collect in one family case and it still isn't totally resolved nearly a year later.

I will NEVER support Progressive in any way. I'm tempted to get a bumper sticker: "If you have Progressive Insurance, Please don't hit ME."

No I did not owe them anything. I had paid for policy in full when I signed up & they took a bite out of refund when I cancelled.
Here is a snippet from the policy doc that they emailed me when I signed up.It is on P32 of P36 doc.

CANCELLATION REFUND
Upon cancellation, you may be entitled to a premium refund. However, our making or offering of a refund is not a condition of cancellation.
If this policy is cancelled, any refund due will be computed on a daily pro-rata basis. However, we will retain a cancellation fee if this policy is cancelled at your request or if cancellation is for nonpayment of premium.

Hm, I just changed insurance companies from Progressive and need to cancel my policy. Hope that's not the case for me...

I went back to Geico and there really isn't much difference in terms of what I am paying/year to Geico vs what I paid to Progressive. I just went with Progressive on a whim(to try something different) not because they were cheap.

$30 cancellation fee. The thing is I set up policy online without tying up their phone lines and would have cancelled online as well except they don't offer that option.

$30...that's about 1/3 my annual stroke for insurance. Shit. This is like the 2nd or 3rd negative thing I've heard about Progressive in a week or so (someone was posting about having to sue them a bit ago...)

So, is Geico any better, then?

Geico has been great to me so far. Their car premium for me was never competitive for me so I was pleasantly surprised by their price and subsequently, their service. My renewal is up next month and I started comparison shopping recently. It appears Progressive will be a little cheaper for me but I see nothing but negative feedback for them in this forum so I think I am going to pass on them.

Call Erich! He's a BARFer and a farmers agent. He saved me about $400 a year and got me 2 times the coverage!

I had geico for my motorcycle and had no complaints about them. They ha died my claim quickly and effectively. But the cost to insure my FZ6 was too much for my tastes. I still insure both cars with Geico.

I was told the $70 cancellation fee was mandated by the state of California.

Charging the insured for canceling a policy mid term is not unusual in lines that have material underwriting expense. Even there a lot of companies will give a pro rata refund tho. But in today's world of automated underwriting for motos and cars, it's nothing more than yet another way companies are trying to squeeze the last dollar.

From first hand experience... progressive sucks ass. Their good at taking your money - i.e. good customer service when you're making payments. But, when it's time to claim, you get a whole different department... like way down in the basement. Usually some old lady who hates life & thinks you're trying to con a couple extra hundred bucks out of a claim.

My current insurance company (state farm) is a complete 180 degree difference. These guys are friendly & fast through the claims process- very fair value assessments too. Their premiums are expensive but worth it when you need them. I'd rather pay more knowing that I'm taken care of if anything happens than having to deal with shady A-holes like progressive claims agents.

Whew, I'm glad I never went with Progressive! Bummer for you, OP :(

I have had good experiences with Pacific Specialty (McGraw) and my current insurer, Allstate. I would have stayed with McGraw but I purchased a car and they don't cover autos.

I don't know what kind of ordeal all you Progressive customers went through but I've had Progressive for the past 7 yrs, 3 claims - none were my fault. I got restitution within 2 weeks for each of those claims, great customer service and even when I speak to the M/C claims department, I had a chat with a female rep. who actually rode SVs for 10 years.

2 of those claims were hit and runs with just a witness note. Of course, I do have premium plans on all my vehicles. ymmv
