Just wondering about the treads about "fast" guys. I have always found over the years that such guys actually believe that they are fast... and the few that actually believe so much, they allow themselves to be convinced to go to the track-- only to find that they are dog slow. Then they come up with a variety of excuses.... to not to go back (despite buying a newer and (often) bigger bike!

What have you heard (or SAID!) from road "fast" guys (borderline squid or even a squid for that matter) you know, have seen etc.

I dont go to the track because:

1. If I go I will get so fired up lap after lap i would crash
2. I might crash
3. Bah, that's for puzzies
4. I dont have the money
5. Track is is too dangerous.
6. Not interested.

NOTE: I am not talking about the average sportbike rider who may rider in a spirted manner :teeth

I do go to the track it's just been a while cuz of number 4

ive heard stories regarding number five where guys would pass in corners when theyre not allowed to and scare noobs, preasure them from behind etc. just not using courtesy on "track day"

In an ideal world:

'I think I'm moderately fast but they all tell me to go to the track where I will be humbled......yes yes good idea.....I'm sure I'm slower than Molasses.'

That's ideally what you want "them" (oh no it's 'us' and 'them' again!!! :teeth) to get into their little heads but...nope.....not gonna happen with them all...

I vote for #7 ~ cuz Highway 9 OWNZ and the track doesn't have a double yellow line to cross over to pass people....

I'm a total newbie, < 2 months riding and i cant wait for my first track day, although I want to gain more skill on the street. I think by this summer i should be ready!!!

Actually you'd gain the most skillz in a group "C" track school

The lamest fast-street-guy excuse I heard was a kid telling me "Anyone can go fast on a track. I ride 140mph on Hwy 1". :wtf

My excuse is #4 LOL... And I am so unfast.

Keep those comments coming ;)

Follow any of the sf moto messenger guys around sf for a day. Then you will understand what being "fast on the street" means.

I think these street heroes would be hilarious if they were not so dangerous. Given that, I find them simply pathetic. You see the same sort of behaviour in some cagers on the highway. They race along, zooming from lane to lane, "passing" other cars as they go. I assume they think that they are outdriving these other cars, when in fact they are doing nothing of the sort. It takes little to no skill to pass cars who are not actually racing you. All it takes on your part is the decision to increase your speed.

It is an entirely different experience when EVERYONE else is also going as fast as their vehicle will allow. I had not given it much thought until my first track day. Once I was feeling comfortable and going faster than some of the other noobs, I quickly found myself getting bunched up behind slower riders in the turns. No worries! I figured that I would just wait for the front straight and then pass them.

Not.

Unfortunately, some of them also knew how to twist their wrists.

Instead of passing, I found myself in an all out drag race with a bunch of other riders. It was suddently not so easy to pass on the straight when the other riders were able and willing to accelerate as much as I was.

Consider that the next time you are "racing" in the hills. The fact that you can "pass" me may or may not mean you have more skill or balls, but it DEFINITELY means you have less brains.

Nice thread..

How about, "I don't have full leathers or else I'd go to the track."

or

"The only reason I would go to the track is to stock up on race fuel."

and

"After I get a new set of tires I might try it out."

then there is the,

"I like to stay on the back roads to keep it simple, otherwise I'd be mixed up with a bunch of yahoo's who might take me out."

and the, "well maybe some day, when I'm older." excuse.

"I don't want to spend the money on a trackday just yet. I'm saving up for an integrated taillight and some flushmounts."

"Trackdays are for wussies with too much money to spend."

"No way in hell am I going to pay $300 to ride Laguna and I am not driving no 4 hours to Buttonwillow either."

The all time favorite, "My fork seal is leaking from popping too many wheelies. Once I get it fixed I may try the track out."

How about the fast guy who doesn't ride in the twisties with his newbie buddies, on 600's, anymore. The real reason is because the newbie guys have been going to the track and are much faster now than the fast guy.

What's the fast guy's excuse for not riding in the twisties?

Well, I just like to cruise to the beach nowadays. Besides, I still got that blown fork seal...

i don't go because of #4 either. As a matter of fact i had to sell the ducky! BooHoo!

I've been riding for like 6 months now.. i want to do a trackday but i dont have the moola. and i dont think i'm fast. i'm still learning :)

The track is not a race and you do learn there

how many fast guys do you know with full coverage bike AND health insurance?
they may think if they crash at street speeds it is safer than at track speeds.

Not having the moola can be a problem, but being "slow" is really not. There were folks at my novice school who were slower on the track than lots of folks I see on the streets.

I figure that if you can ride to Alice's at or near the posted speed limit, and you have the right attitude (ride your own ride and such), a track day/school is a GREAT idea.

- except that you will become addicted to track riding, and your new hobby will become an enormous money pit. :laughing

I find that now I've been to the track a number of times I'm riding MUCH slower when I go out on the twisties. I think it heightens your awareness of how much friggin' crap there is to hit if you fall off at speed.
