Rider Skills and Safety Day is an event that was never supposed to happen. The last event (of any type) up there was over 20 years ago when Kawasaki sponsored "Kawasaki Days". Ever since the residents and the town of Woodside have nixed any other event from occuring. Now for the sake of safety and helping the La Honda Volunteer Fire Department, for the 6th year in a row, motorcyclists, firefighters, law enforcement officers have come together for this awesome event promoting motorcycle safety and as a fund raiser for the La Honda Volunteer Fire Department!!!

This is a community event!

The motorcycle riding community including Dr. Harry Wong, chirorpractor in Redwood City who hosts the "Doc Wong Free Riding Clinics" along with the La Honda Volunteer Fire Department, along with other community agencies such as the California Highway Patrol, San Mateo County Sherriff's department, Cal Trans, Hwy 85 Safety Committee, and other community members have gotten together to create this awesome event.

There will even be opportunities to meet and talk to our local law enforcement officers to share opinions! Also we'll be able to talk to many of the volunteers for the La Honda Fire Department. This get to know each other time can foster much more cooperation and help for all involved!

Not to mention all the motorcycle vendors and geat deals you can get.

The spark that ignited this was due to the accidents and injuries we were having in the area. Something had to be done about it. Dr. Harry Wong, chiropractor who practices in Redwood City, representing motorcyclists and Larry Whitley the captain of the La Honda Volunteer Fire Department got together and found wide acceptance of the event from various agencies and community leaders.

Doc Wong was already involved in motorcycle safety, holding free safety riding clinics in the area for the last 11years and has been very active in the motorcycling community. Larry Whitley as a volunteer fireman has been the first responder at the scene of many motorcycle accidents over the years. Many riders are totally unaware of the ongoing efforts of these well trained volunteers who are there when we need them.

The La Honda Fire Brigade was founded in 1953. Today it provides fire protection, along with the CDF/San Mateo County Fire Department, to over 138 square miles of the San Mateo County Southcoast. The Brigade is one of the county’s last all-volunteer fire departments.

Larry has commented that he's amazed that the feedback has been so positive in support for this event from residents and other agencies.

So the goal of the event is to have a great time and foster understanding between all involved and to gain knowledge that would enhance our enjoyment of motorcycling by improving our skills and gaining knowledge that would help us survive out on the roads!

The cost is free and all are welcome!

If you have a bike that you'd like to show, e-mail Dr. Wong for entry information.

Due to a date conflict with another local bike show, this year's bike show at Rider Skills day will be a static display rather than a "people's choice" contest.

If you have one or more cool bikes that you can bring up for the day, please get in touch as soon as possible! You can send e-mail to skylinebikeshow@yahoo.com or to me directly at craig_s_haggart@yahoo.com.

Thanks!

This year we're going to have a "static" bike balancing competition!

Doc

This year we're going to have a "static" bike balancing competition!
And although it's pretty difficult to balance for long on most motorcycles, it will be easier than usual because the bike is a Montesa trials bike with about 5psi tire pressure. Come on up and give it a try!

Nice to finally meet you today Doc. I was the one who went on the trials bike for a good 2.something seconds and showed up my 2 friends just enough that they didn't want to get on after. Daym chickens. :D What ended up being the longest stay on trials bike at the end of the day?

The event was great. The volunteers were great. And the Aftershocks guys took care of all our suspension setups in a snap. The LE guys were busy when it was finally our turn but the aftershock guys were really quick to finish setting all our bikes up.

Thumbs up. Hope the event raised enough $ for the La Honda Volunteer Fire Department.

I put in some $$ in the raffle, too bad I didn't win anything , oh well. all to a good cause.

The people who balanced the longest on my Montesa did it for 3-4 seconds. A couple of experienced trials riders stopped by near the end of the day and also only balanced for around 4 seconds, but they both admitted to not having been on a trials bike for a very long time. It's awfully hard, and it's clearly a skill that must be maintained!

Thanks a million to everyone who came up. I haven't yet heard the total amount raised for the La Honda Volunteer Fire Brigade, but it's always a significant amount and I know they appreciate every penny.

It was a great event. This was the second time we had a booth there and wont be the last. Cant wait for next year.
