So it was my first race weekend at the most famous track in California. Well ok the second.
On to the story:
With Dust to Glory playing in the Garage Wednesday night I’m putting the finishing touches up on the my bike (Oil change, filter, chain cleaning, lube, and bleeding brakes. Just about finished and notice my brake line is hitting the fork tube pretty good so just give it a little tug with my fingers and blam it brakes rite off at the crimp. I AM PISSED. It is the first time I was not going to work on my bike the night before the race and pack early. I just turn the lights out and go to bed. Well at least I got 90% completed.
So I call up Art at 10bomb.com because I know he has the lines in stock. Art is a great guy and didn’t have them in stock as of 3 days prior so he gives me the ones for his GSXR - SV conversion.
Thanks, again Art.
So I pull in around 8 PM and try to find my dad who has come down to see my first race at Thill and so nicely brought his little camper trailer with AC. I found him pretty easy, as the paddock wasn’t as full as I thought it would be. I unload all my junk and set up the pit area for Russ and myself. I happen to be across from some PTT Dude who is sliding his zuma all over. For my third race weekend I sure felt at home surrounded by the crazies.
A little T-hill history for # 610:
Did my first track day here last April on my R1 and boy was I slow. Over the course of the year I proceeded to crash it here 2 times and ding my head real good once. For almost 3 seconds I thought about giving up the track. But instead I decide to start racing and buy myself a 600 so I could play in the smaller classes. Never got under a 2:10 with mostly 2:15’s as an average.
On to Saturday practice:
My goal coming into this weekend was to be with in 10 seconds of the leaders (The Fong, Hill types) like my Sears times. So I go straight to Dave Moss at Catalyst Reactions to map my Sears settings and work this bike out a bit. I’m in Practice group 3 so I hope to get behind some faster people and try to go some schooling done. After 3 sessions and no super fast guys in group 3 and my times are all over the clock running 2:08’s I am a bit upset since the fast guys are running 55’s. My goal seems lost and I will be 15 seconds off their pace. Just then a buddy Tim #994 walks over and lets me know he’s running 2:06’s with some 2:04’s mixed in. He also tells me he plans on a more aggressive race plan this weekend. I’m now thinking to myself geeezzzzz I better get in behind him and try to keep up. He also kicked my butt two weeks before here on a track day. Last session of the day and I’m feeling pretty good and I’m sure I running good times. I look down and see a 2:10 and my face drops in sadness. I get off my bike and my pit mate and girl friend get my bike on its stands. I slump into a chair and my dad says is a 2:05 good? I say well it would be my fastest time ever!!!! I did two laps at this time so I’m 10 seconds off and my goal is in reach. Happy face now…..
