Does anyone know what the signs of a bad cam chain tensioner (CCT) are? I went for a ride yesterday without my ear plugs and I heard some rattling noise. The bike runs great but the warranty is about to expire. I've heard this has been a problem on F4i's and if I need to get it fixed I want Honda to pay for it. Thanks and Ride Safe:teeth PedroPat

Cam chain tensioners........

What you need to listen for is a clacking/rattling sound when the revs are about 3,000 to 5,000 rpms. If you hear the noise, check the tensioner body for a colored dot. The updated part has a blue dot on it. The original tensioners Honda is replacing have orange dots on them. Only some are making noise. Part #14520-MBW-J22. Good luck.:laughing :laughing :laughing

Thanks sportbike doctor, one question. To check the CCT body which fairing should I take off and where abouts on the engine is it located? I have heard that Honda does pay for the CCT fix. Thanks again. PedroPat

I have heard of others getting this part replaced under warranty. I need to get mine cheched before my warrranty is up.

Hey Pat...It's on the right hand side, so thats the fairing you need to take off. It's on the right sied edge of the block, right below the cyl. You'll see it sticking out. They sound like a can full of marbles when they go bad.

replace it amd replace it and replace it. if its not covered dont pay for it. or youll pay and pay and pay.

Now, I have heard that the CCT going bad is a common F4i problem. Most people tend to hear a rattling at some specific RPM, then change the CCT. Since I have owned the bike, I did notice that my bike ran a little rough between 4,500-6,000 rpm, but I thought it was the bike (I have only owned this bike for 6 months). However, my rattling is REALLY noticeable now and at all parts of the rev range. It sounds like their is a rattling sound coming from where the CCT is, but it is not faint like most people have described. It got really loud at a stop light one ride all of a sudden, so I turned the bike off and towed it home.

So, can a shotty Cam Chain Tension Lifter cause a really loud rattling?

Also, is there a way to tell that my CCT is shot by looking at it or something after I remove it?

Finally, I have found directions for changing the CCT if i need to (which I intend to do myself), however it says to put the "crank positioned to TDC #1" before I start. Now I understand what all that stuff is, but I don't know how to set up the crank to that position. Any tutorials or explinations for that as well?

O yeah! One of Reggies F4i's blew a CCT at Road America when I was cresting the hill into T5 ( I think T5, long straight, over a hill, sharp left, 150 to 30 mph) I fishtailed, slid, swore, and prayed for 150 feet. Kept it upright and left a nice oil trail.
