So I just got myself a TLR and I have a few questions.

1. It got's RS-3 pipes and one side at the bottom of the fairing close to the kick stand the pipe is pretty close and kinda melted the fairing. Is this normal? Could I add a heat pad/sheild?

2. It runs pretty hot. I rode it for about 10 minutes last night and as cold as it was the frame under the seat was pretty warm. Normal?

3. It's warm, I come to a stop, and it idles. Like it wants to turn off, kinda smells like gas, too?

I'm gonna take it to a mechanic tomorrow, but just wanted some feedback.

Thanks. :nerd

try TLPlanet.com, and i think there's a tlrforum.com or something? good sources of info over there. by the way congrats on the bike. my friend has one. it's a beast.

1.) might be normal or something might be a little bent. you can add a heat pad/guard thing. most shops can get an adhesive backed fiber-glass pad that'll help

2.) the frame gets real hot under the seat, so that sounds normal. the bike should run in the 170ish~230ish range. the fan kicks on in the upper 220's and the coolant will start to boil/over-heat around 250

3.)could be a bunch of stuff, but the bike should not "Like it wants to turn off, kinda smells like gas" @ idle.

Hey, thanx for replying. So your TLR does all of what I asked? So this is normal for a TLR? I just checked under the tank this morning and found it to be pretty moist with fuel. I know that's not normal. lol Also, where's the battery? I tried to start it this morning, but I tried it so much that the battery finally died out on me and I couldn't find the battery to jump it. I took the cowl and the seat off and couldn't see it so maybe it's under the tank?

Any help appreciated.

Well my fairings are already burned to fit, and and if you notice there is a cylinder head right next to your inner thigh which gives you that warm sensation between your legs.

Wait till the summer comes. If the heat bothers you that much, you could install a bypass cooling fan switch. You can get the schematics on Tlplanet.com or Tl1000.com.

As for the battery, it is located behind a small panel on the left side fairing, so do not need to remove the whole fairing.

Not exactly sure what you mean by idle. It will never idle like an I4 or be as quiet as sewing machine if thats what your hoping. Mine idles like a v8 with some cam lobe separation. Just one reason why I bought it.

And yes if you stand behind your bike long enough, your eyes will water from the fumes.

TLR

Oh, I definitely know that it will never idle like an inline, that's one of the reasons why I decided on a twin, but this seems kind of different. Could it be that it does this because the air botx was modified and the filter was changed for a K & N? And I also just checked under the tank on the left side and found some fresh fuel under there. The smell was too strong to just be fumes.

I appreciate your help! And I think I will consider that fan bypass before I end up like this... :flame

1. My fairings have never melted. Try pulling the pipe out a bit. If the bike's laid down sometimes the pipe can bend and end up too close to the fairings

2. Yeah, its a hot ass bike. Literally. Your ass will be on fire in stop and go traffic. Once you get it on the open road it should drop like 30 degrees. Mine runs at 180-181 on the highway but like 200-225 on the street.

3. Yeah, it smells like gas sometimes. Thats normal. Its idle is less-than confidence inspiring, thats normal. Make sure you warm it up enough in the morning though. I never take off until Ive reached 100 degrees. If you try to ride it at anything below 90 you'll get to the first stoplight..idle..and die. Once it gets warm it should never die at idle though. Make sure you regularly adjust your idle rpm rate, its that litle round wire running along the frame at the bottom left side of the fuel tank. (Check your manual for instructions on how and when to adjust it)

All of your coomments sound normal except the melted fairing thing.

Congratulations on the new bike by the way!!!!!!! We gotta organize an all-twin ride sometime. THUUUUUUNNNNDEERRRRRRRR!!!!!

Hey thanx for the info! I actually went home for lunch and started to look for things and found that there is a fuel leak. I also called the guy's brother who sold me the bike (it was actually his, but the brother sold it to me cuz it was under his name) and asked him about the leak and he told me that it had a small leak, but nothing major. I think any fuel leaking would be something major, but whatever. He says that it's just a seal, but you'd have to move the engine or something like that?! That doesn't sound cheap. He says that on TLR's the engines come out pretty easy. OK???!! My mechanic will look at it tonight, though.
I'm gonna have to ask if they still have the manual, but if not I'm gonna have to get one. Do you know where I might be able to get one?

Also, there seems to be a whistling sound from the gas cap. Again, I asked this guy about it and he says that almost any Suzuki's make this vacuum-like sound when you've put aftermarket pipes. And that this sound usually is heard after you turn off the bike? Does this happen to yours?
As far as the twin run, that'd be awesome!!! Let me just get my bike up to par and we can do this. You're in El Cerrito, not that far from Fremont. Maybe soon, huh?

the fuel pump gasket on the tl, tlr, and gsxr are known to have problems, thats probably where the leaks coming from. the whistle is also common on the gsxr's and sv's its cause by a pressure build up in the emissions system, it can be stopped fairly easily.

Well, I found this little hose with a valve or something that seems like it's been unplugged and fuel does leak from there, but the previous owner does say that there was a small leak? So how easily can it be stopped? What's the process?

fuel shouldn't leak from the air vent to the tank, which has a little valve on it

I figured that...

I'm not sure. I'm not really mechanically inclined, so I'll see what the mechanic says tomorrow. Wish me luck!

the tiller sounds like it just needs a little TLC

It might be more...

I ended up taking it to a mech tonight and the fuel pump area/gasket was leaking like crazy! There's no spark, so it wont turn on now. Weird. Oh, well. Lets see what happens next, Dun, dun, dunnnnnnn.....:p

The cheapest way to remove the whistling sound is to pop tank open whenever your hear it. Its a Suzuki thing. If you search Tlplanet.com, there is someone, forgot his screen name, who has the entire service manual (also downloadable) on his personal website.

hmmmm....sounds fishy. How many miles have you put on it (if any) since you bought it?

Re: It might be more...

BUMP-SKEEZY (more info, :teeth)

Well, I trailered it from where I bought it. Then I rode it for about 5 miles if that to get it from my cuz's house to mine. I barely bought it Saturday. I didn't really even get a chance to ride it. Why? What are you thinking?

Someone gave me that TL manual site from tlplanet.com. It's just huge so I'll see if I can download it at work tomorrow.

hey there.......if you have the full exhaust system the header pipe is closer to the fairing....you can shim out the fairing with some washers to get some more clearance, my exhaust is just the bolt on cans, so i don't have that problem.
make sure your battery is in good condition (i.e fully charged) before you go hunting down a spark problem.......the TLR needs all the juice it can get to feed the coils and injectors and such. its pretty easy to foul spark plugs too if you don't let the bike warm up between starting (don't just start it up to impress your friends) ;)
i know the manual is big (202 MB) but its worth it to have.......let me know if you need it, i'm pretty sure i have an extra copy already burned to CD :)

If that area is leaking like crazy and youve onlyt put 5 miles on it than the original owner obviously knew of this problem beforehand. Before you go fixing it up, you should have a serious conversation with the original owner, If he "forgot" to mention a fuel leak, who knows what else is wrong with it. Tl's are great bikes if you take care of them, but it sounds like he didnt
