Anybody have a similar problem:

I have a 2001 F4i and when I turn the key on, the fuel pump doesn't turn on, the motor will kick over, but won't start since the fuel pump is not on. The rear lights work, but the front high beam does not and the low beam is just barely on, when I put a volt meter to the headlight its only getting 3 volts.

My next step is to remove the tank and see how much voltage is at the fuel pump, but I'm guessing little to none.

Also, if I remove the low beam and turn the key on, the bike I hear an eletric buzzing sound.

I also checked the fuses, but they all seem ok.

any ideas?

thanks,
Marc

Bump for an old thread, since I have the EXACT same problem. Any help at all would be appreciated. Thanks.

I did finally figured it out. For me it turned out to be a loose connection. For the 2001 F4i there is a large connector under the left air duct cover.

The behaviour was really odd, beacause it was only a partial connection loss which is why some things would work but when I turned the key the fuel pump drained all available current and then everything went out.

good luck

Thanks for the response. This sounds amatuerish, but where is teh starting relay located? Also, I don't think it is the kickstand safety switch, because the bike does crank very strongly, it just doesn't start because there is no fuel(no fuel smell, and the fuel pump doesn't whirl up).

Hi all, thanks, I just fixed the problem. All I had to do was connect the headlights. I didnt that the wires and connectors for the fuel injection was in the headlights. Thanks for your help though.
