Tapered Steering Stem Bearing Installation

I replaced the worn out stock bearings on a 2000 CBR929RR and took some photos to show how it's done. First, you have to jack up the front of the bike and make sure it's secure:

The old bearing race is removed from the steering stem and the tapered bearing, freshly packed with synthetic grease, is pressed on the stem base:

There's a secondary lock nut for the stem nut. To make things easier, I put the steering stem and the new bearing races in the freezer prior to installation. It makes them a tick smaller and easier to press in place. Now is a good time to change out the fork oil. The upper triple clamp is then installed, the forks put on (checking for alignment) and the front wheel/fender is last. The final step is torquing the upper triple clamp nut properly. This bike was purchased used and the previous owner had done quite a few wheelies which put notches in the stock ball bearings. The steering felt vague and sluggish. Now it's smooth as silk.

nice photos, but you forgot the ones of you actually getting the races out of the frame. i usually use these long punch tools i bought from honda and a hammer/mallet to knock those phuckers out. i hate it when the manufactors don't put that little notch on the inside of the frame. if i had mojo to give it'd all go here :thumbup :thumbup :thumbup

What about pictures of the tools you need to actually install the races themselves?

(removing bearings is old hat-- its putting the new ones in that stump me!)

The bike has 13K miles on it. I think the CBR954RR has the same ball bearings in the steering stem.
 
to re-install head bearings use a long ass bolt with a couple big fat flat washers and a nut on the other end. make sure the washers are bigger than the races in diamter. this is the ghetto way for those of us that can't afford a headset press. i work in a bicycle shop so it's all the same thing, just way bigger. make sure all mating surfaces are clean as can be, and grease them lightly to aid installation. anything i missed alan? what about fork crown races? you didn't mention anything about that. i assume you change that when you change the head bearings?
 
The header... I always jack mine up from there. Don't worry, you won't bent nuthin on newer bikes...
