Two Brothers Racing Exhaust Install On 1999 CBR900RR

Jon from Cycle Gear in Santa Rosa is getting a full exhaust system installed. Here's the stock bike with the new system next to it.

I remove the old header and prep the head with PAIR block off plates, fresh copper header gaskets and copper never seize on the exhaust studs.

I then fit the header and use a jack to prop it up while the flanges are lined up. You have to be careful about not dinging the radiator. I've done this procedure about 300 times and I've learned a few shortcuts. The header is very close to the curved radiator core so be careful when positioning the pipe.

You have to tighten each flange gradually and make sure none of the pipe ends gets cocked in the head. An exhaust leak will make a nasty noise and you'll have to pull it all off again.

I then fit the mid pipe being careful to get it on at the right angle. It is important that the pipe has enough clearance between itself and the swingarm.

This is where I found out that the springs were the wrong length.
This is critical because the race pipe doesn't have the tab that mounts it to the frame under the swingarm. The springs and hanger bracket are the only things holding the pipe on basically. The customer supplied the pipe, so he gets to scream at Two Brothers to overnight the right parts.

This is fairly common with aftermarket parts. It totally fucks up my schedule.

So the install gets put on the back burner until the right parts show up. I love the aftermarket. Sometimes.

If this was American Choppers, that grumpy old fuck would be screaming right about now................:laughing

The jet kit install is the next project.

Stay tuned.

and of course tighten the exhaust system flange bolts to the OEM spec of 12 N/m or 9 ft/pds :teeth

With the right parts, it goes together smoothly.
I safety wire the springs because the race pipe is mounted only by the head and by the rear hanger- that's it. If a spring ever breaks, you've got trouble.
