What do people think should be the punishment for going 200 mph+ on freeways with others?

Most of us have probably seen the videos of people going extremely fast on the Freeway while passing other vehicles.

They are posing a huge risk to other drivers (and passengers) because at that speed an accident is going to be catastrophic.

My personal feeling is that they should have their car impounded (no return), have any other vehicle taken away and lose their license for 10 years.

I'm all for going fast, but putting other people at risks for your own kicks is not part of my world view.

Thoughts?

I suppose make the fine financially catastrophic, and actually enforce it, the latter being the part I'm less than confident about (not that my hooligan motorcycle ways haven't benefited to a lesser degree from that)

You stated 200mph

Vehicle should be destroyed and driver should get jail time of at least 2 years min. in state prison

Well, I would suppose death is the occasional outcome, but I feel Grissom is headed in the right direction. What vehicles can actually reach 200mph around here?

Are we looking to catch a behavior, or correct a behavior? Smash down, or lift up? And what's the method that sets people up for success, like how do we reward better behavior? Dynamic insurance rates tied to gps, slow is cheap and fast is expensive?

This opens up the bigger issue of reckless driving, stunts on public roads, sideshows , etc.

Sticking with the thread title I think currently if you’re clocked over 100 MPH it’s two points on your license right now and a hefty fine.
I think those going 200+ are very few but there should be a special place in the book for them.
If their license isn’t suspended I think their car insurance carrier should hike their rates since they’ve demonstrated who they are.

As far as sideshows I’m glad to see some communities cracking down.

What are the limits of your "acceptable" kicks, Climber? Are you like in the 70-80 range, under 120, or what?

I think the punishment should be locked in a room and forced to read Nextdoor posts about speeding

Adopt laws like the Autobahn and fine people for failing to keep right except to pass, thereby impeding our 200mph traveler's speed.

I don't agree that high speed is inherently dangerous; I believe that we could have very high speeds of travel with modern vehicles with only a small decrease in safety, but it requires people to cooperate and drive with diligence, instead of competing or being lazy.

The annual fatality rate for the Autobahn system is 2.7 per billion km compared to 4.5 for the United States' Interstate highway system.

So, how about not penalize people for wanting to go fast, and instead penalize the people who make going fast more dangerous, until they stop doing that?

With others? You mean with another rider? Naw, 150 would be my limit, but I don't have any moto's that will do a buck fifty plus now. :(
Now 200+, community service for a year?!

First of all, nobody is driving nearly that fast around here. 150-160 is the fastest you can realistically get up to around the bay area. Second of all, it's one thing to drive fast, it's when you start endangering other people that's the problem. People around here drive so erratically, driving extremely fast will almost certainly lead to a major collision. Drivers need to be punished for doing stupid shit at any speed.

Well shoot, I'll go buy a turbo busa if thats the punishment.

You ride a motorcycle, don't you?

We all go fast, but I never went triple digits near anybody, I'm not going to put others at risk for my own kicks.

How about you? Or don't you ride?

As to vehicles (other questions), look up Audi RS6 not limited, or RS7.

Plenty of other cars, though much more expensive. How fast would the newest Corvette go if not limited?

We had a doctor crash his Tesla Model S Plaid into a tree about 2-3 hundred meters beyond the traffic light, marks looked like he swerved hard to avoid hitting another vehicle. The estimate of his speed when he crashed was 124 mph.

I'll do you one better and heat it up to 98.6 and use a mini trebuchet to launch it at my face.

Here is a video of somebody going an ungodly speed on autoban.
