I go to get coffee, and I see this:

My son had a car fire on 101 S at the Masten Rd exit in Morgan Hill. There is a CDF Fire Station on the northbound side of 101 at that exit, and they were dispatched by 911 to respond. The quickest route to respond would have been to use the Masten overpass over 101 and then drive the wrong way about 150 feet down the offramp to where my son's car had flames coming out of the engine compartment. But the route they took was to go north on 101 up to the next exit (Tennant Rd if I recall) and then come back down south to Masten. By the time they got back the car had no glass, no tires, no interior - just a smoking pile of metal on the side of the road.

Not trying to justify long response times or anything but i'm pretty sure if you have a "medium" fire the car is going to be totaled in less than 5 minutes anyway. Especially with the recycled garbage they are making cars out of these days... :party

Sad as it is, I couldn't help but laugh a little. Think his insurance is going to renew his policy?

wow. it's rare to see one of those at all, let alone one on fire :burnout
i wonder if you can even get spare parts for it? IIRC it's a carbon fiber tub for the chassis. carbon fiber burns reeeally nice so i'd guess there is a high likelihood that car is now spare parts, unless maclaren has some spares around that they'll let go for cheap :laughing

Car fires nearly always total it anyway, I suspect they don't hurry because there isn't going to be anything to salvage.

Not true. Every single car fire I have been on our objective is to get it out. For several reasons: 1) personal property preservation. People carry lots of shit they don't want destroyed in their cars; 2) protect things around the fire. car fires release an incredible amount of toxins, and can damage the road, surrounding structures, trees, etc. Flying bumpers can seriously injure people too.

Sorry, I'm not saying accusing them of dawdling -- but, I wouldn't expect them to take any undue risks in hurrying to one...does that make sense?

I've always assumed that if I'm in a vehicle that's on fire, I can stop, and take maybe 10 seconds to grab the most important shit out of it, because I don't expect anything I don't take with me to survive.

McLaren F1. When it came out, it was like a million bux.

I kid you not, I thought you're joking and reposting a pic from somewhere on the 'Net. I knew it was a McLaren! What would be the reason? Simple engine fire or the owner drove it with the rear brake engaged.... fast!? :laughing

sad though.. well.. mclarens. I think it was about 500,000 originally

Clearly in the picture you can see that the driver removed his Mclaren titanium tool kit , luggage , and custom shoes from the storage area. (all which the car comes with) :laughing

send that pic into crashed exotics (I think that's what it's called), or some such web site....

I would agree to just let it burn. I also thought that there was a fire extinguisher in those on the right side of the driver.

Ohhhhhhhh, haha.

Nope, took it myself a little bit ago.

Doesn't look like it got involved in a accident in any way. Unless someone set his car on fire he could just pay his comp. deductible. Insurance doesn't cover random engine fires.

oroginal MSRP, if that term even applies, was just shy of one million USD.

www.wreckedexotics.com

in order for the extinguisher to do anything, someone has to have the presence of mind to use it. i suspect the driver was thinking "oh shit, get away before my car goes hollywood BOOM"

that car could be as many as 17 years old and is at least 11, extinguisher was probably waaaay out of date anyway :laughing

I thought for most (if not all) exotics like Ferraris, Lambos, and/or Mclarens, you had to be self-insured?

Will Allstate really put your 1.5 million dollar car In Good Hands? Or will they give you a :wtf if you try to get that thing insured?

I wouldn't put any car in Allstate's hands.

Insurers are pretty much universally bad, but that is a company that won't pay out on any sort of soft issue damage claim, to the extent that they actually sued themselves once to try and avoid paying out when both drivers had Allstate policies.

That said, if you have that kind of money, and are willing to spend enough of it, you can get SOMEONE to write a policy. Lloyd's is famous for taking either side of pretty much any bet, if you pay them enough to do it.

if money's that worthless to you that you can have a $1M car, then you don't need any insurance anyway. :x

I haven't written one yet but I can quote Lambos and Ferraris. You want a quote for a Lambo?:laughing

the driver sits in the middle? that is rad!

I was kidding :) I had Allstate and I hated them.

I was just curious as to whether you could really insure an exotic car like that with regular car insurance. I had a customer once who owned a Ferarri and he told me he has to be self-insured.

Hell no! They's ugly. And kinda slow...

If I was gonna spend that kind of $$$ on a car I'd save up 1.4 million and buy a Veyron ;)

:rofl
