Just a warning to the rest of those who have gotten comfortable relying on a radar detector to supplement awareness while driving faster than the posted speed limit on Bay Area freeways.

I got lit up by a CHP's lidar parked in the dark on the shoulder with all lights off. There were no other cars around, 03:30 Monday morning on 880 in Fremont.

I was very polite, hoping for a warrant, license, reg, etc check but got a yellow piece of paper instead.

So dangerous :rolleyes.

Bike or car? I read that Lidar is aimed at the front license plate because it requires a flat, highly reflective surface to work. I have no idea if this a fact or internet BS. Any valid input would be appreciated.

'95 Honda Civic, no front license plate, Valentine One detector.

If he had sampled other vehicles within range of my V1 I might have slowed down sooner.

R6 and I might have taken the next exit and hid.

on motorcycles it would be your helmet or possibly headlights, that is what I was told by a chp. The other thing he said is your radar detector may pick up the signal a couple of times before he gets a true reading do to our size from a distance.

Bummer, I was psyched to escape LIDAR when I moved here 7 years ago. If I'm lucky the V1 will pick it up before it hits me, but you sure can't rely on that. Saw it for the first time in CA about 3 years ago on 280 but haven't seen it since.

That is a pure Bullsheot tactic of revenue generation and job security. black car black night and who the hell was he protecting at 3:30 in the morning?

DUIs would be much easier to spot while cruising at freeway speeds than on the side zapping people for a reading.

True, but since everyone is speeding @ 3:30am (with the exception of the smart drunks) it's a good excuse to randomly pull people over.

So now we know that the law is broke and ineffective meaning the speed limit is too low BUT we'll then hit the average driver up for a $350 wallet hit thinking we're pulling over drunk drivers and public safety... And you wonder why the CHP has such a soaring rep... :laughing

Rel, honestly you're one of the few I DO respect...

Had much other 'social' interaction with the CHP? Just curious.

I like the CHP. There aren't that many of them, they let us speed, they speed themselves. Overall they seem pretty easygoing and laid-back. I wish they knew how to use a turn signal, but then again nobody else here seems to understand how to use one either.

Never had any problem with them. CHP is probably one of the more friendly highway patrols you'll find in any state. :thumbup

I don't know why you'd want to speed in a Civic anyway, having to listen to the sewing machine thrashing away to hit the mighty speed of 70 would get annoying real quick.

Plenty enough to get a trend from the rookie tough guy usually doing the remote area or late night work to the about to retire I-don't-care seniors.

Why thank you.....

I try to treat everyone the way I'd want them to treat my family.

At 3 in the morning, it's easier to find the impaired drivers who are speeding or doing other things on the road by running radar or lidar.

Think of it this way: The hunter does not hunt its prey by roaming around. The hunter sets up in a spot and waits for the prey.

If people followed the speed laws, they wouldnt get tickets.

Seems pretty simple to me.

My Valentine 1 works great vs. laser, but just like the manual says you get less time to react than with radar.

I just received my custom silicone earphones from Plug Up (via the San Mateo show), which should let me focus my visual attention 100% on the road.

Those earphones will not be used for music, etc.

I might program the V1 to ignore K and X band to minimize unnecessary chatter from cruise control radar and automatic doors.

I might have to reactivate K and X if I plan a trip where cops use the older equipment.

LIDAR has a VERY narrow beam, by the time a detector responds to being lit up- it's usually too late.

BTW: CHP has been using LIDAR for a while now on 880 and in other parts of the state.
