It was one of those rare hot days in SF yesterday so I did something I 'almost' never do.

I rode in tennis shoes, shorts and a t-shirt on my way around SF. Wow it feels kind of good having that breeze against your skin on a hot day.

I declined to do my usual blast down the I280 coming home. There's city street squid rash and then there's 85mph squid rash.

Hopefully it cools off soon so I can go back to the ATGATT program.

Coming back home to the western SF suburbs around 10pm it went from maybe 87f at Twin Peaks to maybe 65f near the ocean. Holy thermoclines!

You are a better person for "squiding" it a few times a year.

More uptight fuckers should do it to.

Face reality when the stakes are higher.

Live.

I met a friend who I haven't seen for the past year yesterday.

She looked at me and couldn't figure out what to say.

I reassured her that it was pretty hot.

Gave the old "I'd rather sweat than bleed" motto.

Her response was "I'd rather bleed" :rofl

i recently got a sweet mesh jacket. anything past 15mph and it feels like i have no shirt on so heat is not an issue.

w/ that said +1 to what karbon says. as long as you understand the risks, wear whatever you want when you ride. enjoy!

My line was, 'it's easier to wash off sweat than road rash.'

I seriously considering the squid-style on occasion too, but whenever it comes down to it, I always find myself going, 'well, I'll at least wear this much gear.' Then this much becomes this much which becomes this much and I end up wearing my full outfit anyways.

Since visiting China in July this year I've realized how much I really don't mind sweating, especially as long as you can keep moving.

I took a poop without a cowboy hat the other day with the same sense of freedom. :love

I'm all for it from time to time. I took my helmet off while searching for a hotel in a small town in Baja and it felt awesome on so many levels.

But squid at your own risk, kids. :shame

Rode up from Monterey yesterday in my perforated leather jacket. Damn it was hot once I got to Prunedale. If I lived in yesterday's heat, I'd get some mesh too.

I went Harley commercial style.

Reinforced cotton and openface helmet. Never went faster than 30 though.

Was anyone at Alice's this Sunday? It was squid central that day... :|

I prefer to sweat.. My last crash was the first ride of spring. I went out with just jeans, T, tennis shoes, gloves & helmet. I wanted to feel the breeze as I rode too.. Unfortunately, a douche cager cut me off and panicked when he looked over his shoulder to see me there. Instead of getting back on the gas he hit the brakes and I clipped the left quarter panel. I slid for a good 40 yards with my right leg caught under the bike. Shoes came off, top of my right foot was ground down to the bone, my arms and shoulders rashed up pretty good but the worst part was that my gloves didnt hold up as they were supposed to. My finger tips were ground down to the bone from my hands sliding.. S**t happens though, I still ride with no jacket from time to time.

You know, I've read that you actually don't gain anything by "squidding it" in hot weather. I think it's actually worse. You see, in the dense leather gear you wear to protect your skin from road rash, your body is allowed to sweat. You sweat the most when you stop, and the sweat cools you off by evaporation when you get moving again. Now, when you are riding around without wearing ANY gear, what will happen is that you'll evaporate more quickly and lose the cooling benefits of the sweat. In essence, you will be HOTTER while wearing LESS clothing. It is the evaporating sweat that cools you off, not the air, and since wearing riding gear allows you to evaporate more slowly, you will feel cooler and be less at risk for heat related illness... as long as your gear is perforated nicely, that is :D

You are correct Sir. You dehydrate less than you do with a 60+MPH wind running over your skin. And you don't get as tired. Hot weather is best combated with an evaporative cooling system, like one of those water retaining vests, a wet t-shirt, or a bucket of ice inside your leathers. :teeth

it is the case that when the outside temperature exceeds the internal body temperature (98.6 for most of us), then you at least want to protect your skin from the outside air ... this explains traditional middle easter attire. Naturally there is a distinction between wearing silk scarves and wearing aerostich motorcycle gear. Nonetheless, if I ride a motorcycle, I gear up, and try to pick a route that will involve fewer stops, shade, and if possible, take me by the ocean.

That's an emotional, not logical refutation. I know I was glad for the sweat under my perforated leathers when I finally got moving down on Heigenberger today - it felt so cool.
