Best track cage for less than 30k

I had a 350Z and loved it. It didn't end well for the car with its short wheelbase and my inept hands, but I otherwise had a blast in it.

Was it the wine?? :laughing

And for the record, it should be pointed out that I have no idea how to drive a car and much less qualified to give advice. :laughing

I think the C5 Z06 will fit your needs.

I would only recommend against it if you want something that is nimble. The M3 and Cayman S is much more nimble and more fun to drive IMO. The driver input and connection of the car makes you feel a lot more in control. The Z06 is a serious monster that's out there to go fast and get great lap times. It is also much more simple than the other two.

I had all the above cars but didn't have them for longer than 6 months each. I only drove it in the twisties and never a real track day so my experience may be a lot different.
 
Vet at 20k seems to have lots of miles. As in 100k plus. Not sure about that. Worries me because I am not a wrench.

20-25k can get you one with 20-40k miles! They are also pretty much done depreciating and won't lose too much value even after a few years.

A 350Z is slow :laughing

Hate to agree, but this will is the best bang for the buck. If you don' wrench these can be very reliable and damn fast. I do a lot of track days with HOD (they store their stuff at my place) and by far the Z06 FRP will outlast and out perform an M3 or the cayman, and if you are big it will fit you better. There is a ton of aftermarket support and lots of folks know how to work on them.

I love to wrench on stuff so personally I'd do another 93 RX7 with an LS3, strip it put cage and brakes on it and be done.
 
As much as I'd like to see you in a Porsche, a Vette is probably your best choice given your parameters. I wouldn't worry too much about the higher mileage cars. The motors in those things are really realible and if they do fail, not too expensive to just replace.

Porsche, while reliable and handle really well, will not be cheap when they break, and every thing breaks sooner or later.
 
Miata is just too slow.

C5 Z06, or 350Z.

Tracking a sport bike is generally a turn-key affair. Just show up and ride. To get a car to hold up to a 20min session will require some modifications. With your skill, any car you buy is going to require upgraded brake rotors and calipers. If you get something with less than 400hp eventually you will want more power. Try to stay below 3000lbs.

Caymans are nice, but when the motor lets go (not if, when) you'll be looking at $15k to repair it.

If you want a car that won't require mods to hold up at the track, you'll need to get a GT-3.
