Trike vs Atom

A guy on a trike waved the two-finger salute today. Me, being a snob SOB on a very tall horse, obviously didn’t wave back.

Trikes: none of the safety and comfort of a car, none of the thrill and fun of a motorbike.

It made me think. Why not an Ariel Atom? It’s safer than a three-wheeler, and from I understand, a hoot to drive. And comparable prices.

If you no longer could ride a motorbike, would you get a trike? Would you consider an Atom?

Don't need 8 liters and NOS to have fun.

I'd splurge for an Atom V8 with the dual 1300cc Hayabusa top ends mated to the bespoke crank and bottom end.

In fact I ride my bicycle more than my moto.

Would never get a trike as they pretty much hit every bump in the road.

There's an explanation of the physics of why a trike can be a harsher ride than a motorcycle. Wider stance, other factors placing more shock through frame. Not sure I understand that premise, but I do know simple math.

Three wheels leave nowhere to go when encountering a pothole. Car? Split the tires and let it pass underneath the gap. Bike? Deftly direct front wheel to left or right. Trike? Pick a tire to take the punishment.

I think a used Atom goes for $35,000. But I haven’t looked for one.

An A-Atom is a car. 4 wheels, etc. A trike is a motorcycle conversion of sorts with very fucked up steering dynamics...especially the Can-AM Spyders.

I know of an able-body person in Sonoma County (or thereabouts) that rides a trike.

Can’t say I would or wouldn’t ever drive one.

Certainly not now but who knows what the future will say.
