The most remote back road in California

I think it is Forks of Salmon loop. It is about 125 miles from the nearest city and about 50 miles from the next back road at the midpoint. It goes from Etna to Forks of Salmon to Callahan and is over a 100 mile loop of back woods riding.

The star shows were Forks of Salmon is. The loop I did was from Etna to Sawyers Bar to Forks of Salmon to Cecilville and to Callahan. It is one of the most remote twisty road loops and very fun riding.

To put it more in perspective, it is west of Weed which is about 300 miles up I5 from the Bay Area.

How's the road itself?.................I've been on 3 and 96 many times but have never felt compelled to do this ride. Heard is too goaty and "gravely" at some points.

What's your take?

It is goaty in some parts, but a small percentage to my surprise, considering how it looks on the map. The Section from Forks of Salmon to Cecilville is one lane with rough pavement with a soft gravely shoulder. In some parts the drop off down to the river is considerable. However the section out of Etna to Sawyers Bar is fresh pavement, well graded, clean and an excellent road. So is the road from Cecilville to Callahan, except for a section that they were repaving.

Nice touch.

The picture is looking towards Sawyers Bar from Forks of Salmon. That section is also one lane as you can see.

Talking about real goats, there were plenty of them at this house we stopped at. No picture though.

Ha Ha Ha, carefull John your cable bill might get re-routed.

That meeting I had in SF today was cancelled and they forgot to tell me. So I got to spend the morning splitting lanes to get down there and the rest of the day playing around on Hwy 1 and the coastal range. After the turn off to Mt Tam I had the roads to myself. Leisurely ride just puttin in 3rd & 4th most of the time.

All that and I get paid for the mileage too.

Did I wave to you heading South on Hwy 29 around 4:20pm today???

Small group and what looked like an ST13 leading met on a corner coming from sun to shadow couldn't tell if it was you.
