Talking Flatlanders invade Paso Robles

Someone had suggested a play-by-play write-up for this 3-day trip. I thought about it, and decided it’s impossible. I don’t have enough computing power or writing skill to do justice to the stories and memories that each of us came home with. The amount of comedic materials came out of Friday's trek to Paso Robles alone had us laughing non-stop for two evenings. Instead, I'll try to give a summary of the highlights from my perspective. I hope others will jump into this thread to tell their Paso Robles stories.

First... A huge round of applause to all the leads and sweeps: Terry (unobtanium), Danny (dmc), Ian (Ianh), Chris (ctcdaniels), Ned (tourontwo), Sunseerie, Donny (donnydogood), and Chuck (chuckbecker). You guys did great! Thanks also to Justin (shadowfire) for support duties. And to everyone... It was great to meeting you all. Let's do this again soon!

You get the best stories when you are lost!
We had a really rough start Friday morning. People and groups were getting lost all over the hills of Los Gatos. The three groups did eventually find each other in Hollister and then later in Coalinga. It took a solid afternoon and a night of socializing by an outdoor fire-pit to finally getting a full picture of all that occurred. I had never laughed so hard until now -- the stories were just too funny. Traveling with us is not just another sport-touring trip. It's a freaking adventure We did quite a few goat trails which were 30- to 40-mile long each. Awesome twists, turns, and sceneries.

The Davis Crew
Miran, Mark, and Daniela... Your senses of humor made the crappiest goatie fun, and the boring-est desert stretches tolerable.

We did have one crash on Saturday
It's suffice to say that two-wheel traveling carries risks. Crash can happen when you are far away from home. It's fortunate that the rider walked away with minimal pain and soreness. The reminder to the rest of us is this... If you normally ride a pace of 7/10 on roads those you are familiar with, please scale the pace back even further to allow greater margin of safety. Piling on big miles day-after-day can take a toll on you physically and mentally. When your mind isn't 100% fresh or alert, small mistakes are amplified.

This is too much fun!
Riding so many great roads in a day is a lot of fun. It gets even better when you are re-living and savoring those memorable moments with your fellow travelers around a fire pit, and over a drink of your choice. Conversations in the evening pretty much surrounded "Did you see that this morning?", "Where did you go?", "How about that road?", or "Did your see that CHP plane?"

The Beemer Twins
There is so much to say about these two, so I best say nothing The gigantic GSA tanks saved a couple of smaller tanks.

Separated again!!!
Plan gets changed. Group gets broken up. It’s par for most return trips. The cool thing is we kept running into familiar faces on our way back to the Bay Area. Hey, there is Reilly and Ned. Oh, here comes Ron and his brother! We were just everywhere

ReillyJ and Chickenstrip
I want to mention this... I and many others were so very impressed with Reilly. Although I have never ridden with Reilly personally, but by all accounts, Reilly is fast. Though more than once, I heard him saying something to the effect of "I am not with it today (or right now), so I'll join a slower group (or hang back)." On the other end of the speed spectrum is Barbara (Chickenstrip). She was the slowest of the third group, but she maintained predictable pace and lines, and flowed through the crappiest corners without drama.

They are riders who each maintains a constant awareness of their own changing limitations, and has nothing to prove to anybody. Mad props to both of them

Bits-and-Pieces of “You had to be there”
- "Which gear?"... "It doesn't matter."
- "This is a fucking awesome group ride. I have been alone for the last hour-and-half."
- I always buy two rear tires.
- "I hate this road. I hate my bike. I hate this trip. I wanna go home."
- "Where is the rest of your crew?"
- "Are we in Kansas?"
- "Is that what they call line dancing?"
- "I don't think she should be riding the bull."
- "You ride with us, you ride alone!"

Left the Bay Area with about a dozen friends, and came back with thirty
That pretty much sums up what I got out of the trip. Another 1,000 miles on the clock is just icing on the cake. Let's do this again soon.
