Davis to Paso Robles: Cowtown Starbucks posers invade SoCal

Friday, 3/23: Day 1

The meeting time is 7am at the University Mall Starbucks. 7:17, I'm still filling up my tank while Mark is waiting patiently. We're already behind schedule. Dani is nowhere in sight.

7:35am. Took 113S to 12E, then 160S to Antioch. Followed 4 along to Vasco, then took that all the way to Mines Rd. Mines took us to Del Puerto which spit us out at I-5. I-5 carried us to 152, then 25 to Hollister. Made it on time. But that was just part 1.

From Hollister, we joined the "C" group, which took us down Hwy 25 to Coalinga Rd. It was this road that made me utter the "I hate you guys, I hate this road, I hate my bike, this sucks" speech I got over it and kept riding, and it rewarded me with Hwy 198 and a quick ride down 101 to the motel, where I could finally rest my achy wrists and back.

My highly inappropriate sport-touring mount somewhere past Mines Rd after we blew the turnoff.

Later on, after the park ranger told us where to go, we found Mines. Here's Mark and Dani discussing how to properly carress a tit.

Cool scenery next to Mines Rd

After we met up with the group in Hollister, we headed down 25; here's a shot on a downhill stretch while on the move

Regrouping around Coalinga somewhere. By now I was really jealous of the gentleman with the R1200RT, that comfortable bastard

Saturday, 3/24: Day 2

Today's route took us over 46 to 41 to 229, then to 58, over to 33, up Pine Mtn Rd, then down to boring-ass 166 where we the friendly CHP plane waved at us, and then finally to 101N for the quick getaway back to Paso for some much-needed grub, and in my case, fuel

Here we are at the corner of 229 and 58

Fixin' Dani's brake light

Then some sort of Ferrari club roared by

A cool $10,000,000 in cars passed us by like it wasn't a big deal.

Up on Pine Mountain Road, Denny and Andy had us in stitches, while ChuckBecker cleaned his wheels somewhere in the parking lot

Back down 33, or maybe it was 166, I don't know, I was kinda low on gas, but the cheapskate in me said "fuck that, I'm not paying 3.83,"

so instead I stuck it in 6th, tucked behind the screen and kept it at a steady 55 all the way to Atascadero, where I got scared and gassed up thinking I was about to run out. The bike took 3.7 gallons for 172 miles. I consider that a fuel economy win despite the blatant lying by my fuel light (had over 0.8 gal in the tank).

err, wait..no..

Don't worry, the 2nd to last one wasn't mine either, I'm slow (It was Dani's)

Sunday, 3/25: Day 3

Andy, Chuck, Mark, Dani and I flipped off the rest of the group and wheelied out of the Chevron station, heading home.

We stopped right before 25 to take pics. Here's Dani

Marky Mark, but no Funky Bunch

Nice trip report....

But really...SoCal? The Central Coast is gray area, not quite NorCal, but not yet SoCal.

Hmmph.
//went to school in San Luis Obispo and never thought of it as SoCal.

For what it's worth, I highly agree that we were in Central California. I grew up in So Cal, and have now lived in Nor Cal for nearly 20 years. There's no way Paso Robles should be considered So Cal.

I didn't know "Central California" existed. I thought there were two divisions. Pretty much everything south of Fresno is Southern California to me.

Looks like a fun trip. You were on a TL1000s huh? Did you get tired or soar? 172 miles on one tank...thats awesome. I'm always looking to gas around 110. Thanks for the pics.
