Talking Trip Report – Back to 58!

There were 8 of us, and we had plans to ride NorCal for three days this past weekend. With the weather looking grim everywhere (particularly nasty for the areas we were supposed to be in), we changed our plans for the Central Valley and Coast. Yes, we had just visited there a few weeks ago. When you are a road junky, you don’t mind a do-over. Why fight the urge?

Saturday morning, we met at Pt. Richmond Starbucks. Clouds and impending showers did very little to dampen the enthusiasm… Well, coffee, hot chocolate, and ciggies helped too. It was very nice of Jack, Danny and Alea to see us off. The real surprise of the morning was Eric showing up on a beautiful blue Tiger. Thank God it’s not another GS.

The bikes…

Tim, Sunseerie, and Chris…

Catching up…

Alea…

Hutch’s 750…

Saturday’s route took us through Mines, San Antonio Valley, Hamilton, Quimbly, 25, Coalinga-Los Gatos, 198, Peachtree and Indian Valley. Tim and Hutch on San Antonio Valley Rd…

Everyone has a shot of this from the top of Hamilton…

Taking in the road below…

On our way to Hollister…

A quick stop at the local Fosters Freeze, and off we went. The sky doesn’t look so good above 25…

Taking a picture break on Coalinga-Los Gatos… What a fun road!

Chris and Ian’s GSAs…

The view before dropping into Coalinga…

Old folks get tired easy. More coffee and posing in Coalinga…

198 is usually fun… but we knew a Chippie, who drove past our gas stop, was waiting for us. We were right, and he was disappointed. At the junction of Peachtree and Indian Valley, them cows are not impressed…

Sir Ian in his hazmat suit…

On the road again… It’s nice to have a truck, driven by a local rancher at speed, to run intereference on the blind turns and rises (no shortages of those on Peachtree and Indian Valley) for you.

We arrived in Atascadero at 7pm. A quick shower and off to dinner we went. The Big Bubba’s Bad BBQ was a good hike from the motel, but we needed to stretch our legs anyway. Good food. Good music too, or so I thought, but the others disagreed The sky started to drizzle as we were heading back to our rooms for the night.

Sunday, we awoke to cold and rain… with thundershowers in the forecast.

Group decision time…

It was early, so we decided to have breakfast at the local Denny’s first. Unfortunately, Chris had to head back for business issues. Ian, being a good friend, decided to go along to keep him company. We said our goodbyes after breakfast. I was happy to hear later that they caught some good weather breaks along Hwy 1.

Rain or not, it was time to fucking ride. We caught some wet stuff on 229 and on 58 just before dropping down to Taft, but the weather turned out much nicer and dry than predicted.

229… good stuff…

58… on a vista before dropping down to Taft… At this point we had just emerged from some really bad weather above. Navigating some of the higher elevation switchbacks with rain and wind pounding away made some tense and interesting moments.

Getting gas in Taft… Harley riders would laugh at this parking job.

Back-tracking our route, on 58 again... Sunseerie, pondering the meanings behind this implement…

Group shot…

We lucked out this time coming over the pass… and got to tackle the good stuff.

At the 101 end of 58, we took in some coffee and pastry in the small town of Santa Margarita. Then we headed back to 229… Some wanted to do a few laps, and others wanted to take pics.

229…

Not knowing how to pan correctly, I just snapped away and hoped for the best. A sequence of Eric on his Tiger…

Spending some fun time on 229 was an excellent way to wrap up the day. We even managed to have time for a little nap (old folks get tired easy) before dinner.

Monday, the one perfect weather day we had been so looking forward to. Old Creek Rd., and Santa Rosa Rd. were on our radar. Hutch said goodbye to the group at our morning coffee for a more direct route home. Something about needing to spend some time with the wife… Anyhow, we took 41 to Hwy 1, and turned off on Old Creek shortly. Old Creek just isn’t long enough… Although not busy, there were still a few cars I’d preferred not seeing.

Santa Rosa Rd… Quiet, super-goaty, and bucolic (not a word I was expecting from this bunch) were the adjectives thrown about. Here are some quiet moments on that road…

Definitely a road that I would like to come back to... and spend more time on.

In the town of Cambria, we spotted this friendly local

Turning north on Hwy 1… Traffic was light. We zoomed. What a fun stretch it is… The last time I had been on it was probably 10 or 12 years ago. A nice trip down the memory lane (old folks say that a lot). The group taking a break in Gordo…

Shot of Hwy 1 taken from Nacimiento-Fergussen…

From a vista…

We then made a lunch stop at the River Inn…

We spent quite some time loli-gagging here, under their colorful umbrellas. At the price tags of $12 burger, and $4 soda… We thought we should at least milk it for all its worth.

We made another sightseeing detour through Monterey… and snapped some pics…

It was late in the afternoon, so we decided to skip the idea of catching Hwy 9 in Santa Cruz. In stead, we took an express, but out-of-commute route home (to Marin and the East Bay) via Hwy 1. In Pacifica, we made another coffee stop. We were tired, but we weren’t too tired to laugh whenever somebody brought up a moment or a story from the last 800-some miles. Laughing and grinning… Good time.
