2 Nights on the Northern Cali Coast

Here are a gang of photos from our recent camping trip on the Northern Cali Coast.

It was a pretty simple two-night camping trip from the East Bay across the San Rafael Bridge to Sir Francis Drake all the way to Olema on the coast. Then, up Highway One, past Bodega Bay and just short of Jenner to the Pomo Canyon Environmental Campground.

http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=451

This campgound is beautiful. About 21 sites run along a little creek and on the hillsides of a canyon full of ferns and redwoods. You don't need reservations and it's $15 per night. There IS potable water available but its the most disgusting water I've ever had the misfortune of consuming. It is so chlorinated that it burns. If you go, BRING YOUR OWN WATER. And if you can, go on a week day night. Thursday night was quiet. Friday night brought the drunken, cooler-toting howlies. One guy set up his camp with tiki torches... I am not lying. In a forest!

Ryan had only about 400 miles on his new F650 so we stayed off the highways as much as possible to keep the revs varried. I rode my Kawasaki Ninja EX250. I learned a lot about my relatively new-to-me bike, about riding the twisties and other generally new and exciting things for a n00b to learn. Highway riding in traffic, over a windy bridge, along the very windy coastline (did I mention there was a lot of wind?), along a crappy 3 mile road and a final 1/4 mile on gravel with pot holes the size of Godzilla footprints. Don't ever let anyone tell you that 5'2" is too short to ride, that 110 is too light or that a 250 Ninja is inadequate for a road trip.

We left on Thursday afternoon at around 4pm. Later than I had hoped as it put us into some heavy traffic but it turned out to be just fine.

First, we had to say goodbye to the cat:

We donned our gear (ATGATT) and got on the road:

Here is a shot along the California Coast.

Unpacking the gear. The Zegas were great and the tent and bedroll and sleeping bag just strapped to the top very securely.

One of the beautiful redwoods at the campsite:

Our little tent in the pretty campground. It got dark as soon as the sun set because of the tree cover. And there was a broad meadow at the entrance of the canyon that was great for star gazing.

Ryan cooking up some dinner:

In the middle of the night, we heard the raccoons trying to get into our stuff but we were not concerned. We had the cooler in the tent (not bear country, obviously). Evidence of the attempted theft!

Friday we got up, had a nice breakfast and made the three mile hike to the coast:

Shell beach:

A funny rock gets a funny face.

Interesting geology where the layers have been warped:

When we got back, we had lunch and decided to go for a ride. The bikes on the shore:

Ryan with Arched Rock in the background:

The wind was pretty epic. It was pushing me around like it hated my guts.

We had a nice dinner in Bodega Bay and rode back up to the camp at sunset. It was a nice night and the next morning we headed out. That made four crossings of the gravel strip for the n00b on the Ninja. Happily, I didn't dump the bike.

We gassed up in Point Reyes Station. The gas for the trip ran us about $20 total.

The post trip washing of the babies:

See you next time!

Yeah, that was a fun trip. Thanks for the thoughts, folks... this was a bit of a shakedown for longer future trips and we'll certainly write them up too...
