LA to SF photos

I was able to make it as far north as Paso Robles on central coast backroads before I ran out of light, at which point I ended up taking 101 back on that mousepad also known as the seat of the RC51.

I had to double back 50 miles at one point to try to find out where the cover to the tail storage space flew off to. Bummer, as I was planning on finishing the trip with either Highway 1 up, or heading to the coastal mountain roads west of Paso Robles up to King City, finishing up with 25.

Pain? Perhaps. Twisting my right wrist to release a wonderful wave of torque upon which to surf the interstate made it a "good pain", if there is such a thing.

The speedometer read 580 miles by days end. Sounds like a long time in the seat, until you realize that 300-400 of those were spent hanging off of that seat for what was probably thousands of curves. Here are a few visual samples, starting with this one from the paved slalom which is Latigo Canyon Road.

Latigo Canyon again. The squiggly line in the distance just above the seat of the Honda is just where I just came from, just down the hill. Excellent road.

One of three tunnels carved into the rock on Highway 33, where I totalled my first bike back in 1995. There's a turn in that tunnel.

A portion the paved slalom just up the road from Buttonwillow. I tend to have more fun on this road than on Buttonwillow. It's smoother.

The riding position was aggressive, with more weight on my wrists than I would like on a streetbike. But for the type of riding I was doing in the daylight hours, it wasn't too much of an issue.

The seat was a mousepad glued to a rigid tailsection. I can't see myself doing large numbers of miles on such a machine.

It's an incredible machine, but you've seen what I look for in a streetbike. Upright ergonomics and softer suspension don't hold back my speed on public roads, it's moreso my sense of what speeds are appropriate and safe as opposed to machinery imposed limitations. The ZX-6 doesn't hold me back. Morthrane's "Cursed Cruiser" would be another story.

I know how fast I want to go on public roads, any bike I choose must be capable of letting me ride that speed, and preferably do it in as comfortable a manner as possible.

It currently depends on something that is currently out of my control or influence. I'll keep you posted.

Mike,

Nice photos, I'm jealous! Glad to see you made it back in one piece and w/o severe carpal-tunnel from doing the RC51 handstand back from L.A..
