My NorCal mini-tour
Here some pics of my bike/camping trip. I covered 1200 miles in 4 1/2 days around northern california. My goals were to do 36, 299 and visit the lost coast and by doing so cover all the good roads within my reach onpashnit and Madmaps .
Day 1. I left on a Sunday around 7pm. Just slabbed it to Cloverdale from Mountain View. Note to self : Never ever camp again at KOA...it's too damm expensive!! Here's a shot before leaving. ![]() Last edited by Nelson; 06-23-2003 at 12:04 AM.. |

Day 2. I met some guys heading the same way and headed on 128 towards the coast. Unfortunately one of the guys highsided and took another rider with him after our lunch in Fort Bragg and cut their trip short. Luckily I was so stuffed after lunch that I stayed back. After a few ours of waiting for ambulances and tow trucks I headed up north by myself as planned.
This shot is somewhere off Hwy 128. ![]() Last edited by Nelson; 06-23-2003 at 08:07 AM.. |

From Redding slabbed on 5 to Red Bluff and hit 36 .
For those who still don't know this is definately one of the best motorcycle roads in the country and I HAVE ridden Deals Gap and the Cherouhala Skyway back east. I'ts over 100 miles long and it changes several times from nice hills to wide roads to sweepers. EVERYTHING on one road. I camped for FREE somewhere in the Shasta Trinity National Forest ina lonely campground right out of the Blair Witch project and completed 36 on Day 4. ![]() |

Day 4. Well this day I finished 36. Thought about going to Oregon on 96 but I had to get home. i'll save it for another trip. From there I headed to the Lost Coast which was slightly dissapointing as far as the road goes. A mere 135 mile loop on Madmaps wil take you forever since the road is a "goat trail" with bumpy tight corners, gravel and poor asphalt. I made it out of there before dark and headed down on 101 to Benbow where I camped at a State Park where I could grill without a burn permit, finally!!!! So you know 101 is actually a pretty fun highway north of Leggit.
Here's shot in the lost coast. ![]() |

Day 5. Headed on 101 South......thought about hitting 253 or 128 again but took Skaggs Spring Road to Stewarts Point. Probably the smoothest twistiest road I've ever seen. Unfortunately with a 30 mph speed limit. The weirdest thing, the first half is like a racetrack and has a 30 mph speed limit. Second one is a narrow, tight bumpy road that has only one lane at some points and has a 40-45 mph speed limit. Go figure.
Before that a picture at Lake Sonoma right before the start of Skaggs Springs road. ![]() Last edited by Nelson; 06-23-2003 at 12:02 AM.. |

then hit Stewarts Point....notice the police car in the background. I assumed he was the only cop around so I procceded to "get aroud quickly" on hwy 1. But believe me the views are so amazing (better than Big Sur for those who have been on Hwy 1 south of the Bay Area) and the cliffs are so scary that it is hard to keep your eyes on the road enough to go fast.
