Sunday Highway 36 ride
Gary proposed a one day ride on Highway 36. Sounded right to me ! Departure time
was set a 7am from Vacaville, about 40-50 miles from me. My alarm goes off at 5:45. Forget it. Need one more hour of sleep else I'd be a road hazard. I end up leaving home at around 7. No sweat methinks, I'll catch up to them after they finish breakfast in Red Bluff. I took this shot slabbing it on I-5 to practice my shoot while riding technique. The windblast was horrid, couldn't keep anything steady. I don't know how Bronto does it. http://suzuki.bayarearidersforum.com...threadid=65781 http://suzuki.bayarearidersforum.com...threadid=65788 ![]()

Waiting in Red Bluff at 36, and waiting, and waiting.. They either ate really fast or
are eating really slow ! finally, I resign and begin my own ride on great rolling hills. ![]()

36 reaches into the mountains. I stopped here and waited some more. It's too bad
the picture doesn't reveal any depth.. It was a view. ![]()

Proof of location picture. Shortly after this photo I had my only notable interaction
with a car. A Volvo pulled out of a driveway ahead of me (what town ? I don't remember !). Not a real radical move, but enough so that I had to get on the brakes a bit to maintain a safe distance. Soon we came to a hill with a passing lane, me on the left, they on the right. As I get ready to pass, they accelerate ! Sheesh, don't you know ? Even if your vehicle says 'Turbo' on it, it doesn't mean that you can outrun every vehicle on the road whenever you feel like it ! This would be a good time to interject some snide comment about Volvo drivers except that my first car was an old Volvo 144 Sedan beater mobile :-) ![]()

It's getting near the end of 36 and what do I see coming the other way. A BMW K-bike
that looks just like Gary's bike (per his photo posted) ! I gesticulate wildly hoping to get his attention in case he's looking in his mirrors. He turns around ! We yak it a bit. Turns out that no one else showed up for the ride and he skipped having breakfast in Red Bluff so he was ahead of me the whole time. He was so far ahead of me that he was just now coming back from lunch in Fortuna and about to do 36 going the other way. I have to book it home on 101 to be back home at 6 so can only imagine the fun of doing it twice, it would be like a nonstop day of Mines, Berryessa, Calaveras, 9 and 85 with no car traffic. I get home at 6:15 (not bad), mileage: about 590, smilage: off the chart ! ![]()

It was good meeting you Thorick, sorry we didn't get to do the ride togther. It was one of the best riding days I've ever had.
I left Red Bluff at 0945 and reached Fortuna for lunch and gas at 1245. Left Fortuna at 1330 and got back to Red Bluff around 1630. Finally got home about 1830 and 520 miles total for the trip. My new Diablos stuck well, the weather was perfect and the bugs were crunchy and sweet! ![]()

Yeah, 36 is awesome. You both made good time. I know how hard it is to stop to take pics on those roads. You just don't want to stop.

anyways, I've found that the solution to this was to just get rid of the numbers on my speedometer and look at where the big hand is pointing.. that seems to work out really well...

I can hardly wait until next year, when I hope to have a new bike - I want to endulge in rides like this, solo is fine with me, but on my 15 year old bike, I just would hate to be stranded alone.
