AFM Round 3: Non-starter

I had some heightened angst going into Round 3 because I was squeezing in getting a dyno tune at NorCal Cycles and I couldn’t feel settled until I had the bike back in my hands, which I did around 4 PM Friday afternoon.

My list of things to work on at Thunderhill was way too long for a single weekend, having only spent one track there my FZ-07. I was definitely missing Friday practice.

Saturday morning was a struggle to come up to a competitive pace but at least the difficulties were all with me as the dyno tune was yielding noticeably more power down the front straight. I did have some morning issues with setup causing some front end chatter. Dave Moss got me sorted out and the chatter went away but I didn’t go much faster.

Clubman lightweight only lasted 17 turns for me. Another rider tried to make a pass on the outside of 2 on the second lap, but ended up in a place where I couldn’t see him while I was leaned over. When he almost ran off the track because of his line, he chopped the throttle by the exit curbing. At the same time I was driving to the curbing at full throttle and still couldn’t see him because I was leaned over and looking at turn 3. I finally saw him about 1/4 second before our lines converged and his rear clipped my front. I went over the the handlebars and tumbling into the dirt while by bike went straight down the track with the other rider, sliding all the way from 2 to 3 and ending up in the dirt by the T3 worker’s station.

Despite the gnarly crash, I was able to get up and walk away - woohoo! The whole body is pretty sore today, as you might imagine, but nothing a week of taking it easy won’t fix.

While I was only able to manage 2:09s before my crash, I feel like an overnight to look at the data and sleep on things would have bought me a bit more time. Maybe not the 4+ seconds I need to catch up to Rudy on #776, but perhaps a bit closer. If all goes well, I’ll be back for Round 4 and can start the process over again.

I was in the CSRA race and was just telling my wife about the longest crash I've ever seen. I saw the yellow in T2, went all the way through T2 and then saw you hiking up the hill on the outside of T2, but no bike...anywhere! It was weirdest thing..."where did that dude come from??" tipping in to T3 I finally saw your bike waaay out by the worker station.

That picture is awesome. All you need is a big "S" on your chest.

Bummer!

Luke,

That's a bummer...but I'm glad you are OK.

I was wondering why I didn't see you in Open Twins. Here's hoping you are back at 100% for RD #4. See you there!
