This look like yet another great place I need to ride!
I'm looking at the spotwalla and working on mapping it into Gaia.
Thanks Guys!

My Spotwalla for the trip -

It's the Little-Big bike ride because I was on my 1090 and Eric was on his KLX250 as seen in front of "old 67" after a killer run down 25 and Coalinga/Los Gatos Rd.

We were the Wolfman Luggage Pinup krew

Eric's KLX is sweet.

We snagged one of the last sites at Selby CG

Photo Credit - Eric B he calls it "1090 at sunrise"

Out on Soda Lake Rd, and look closely to see the remnants of a tumble weed Eric hit.

The brown Carrizo

After running Soda Lake Rd to Maricopa for gas we hit Elkhorn Rd for the way back.

Eric is a great tour guide and knows a lot about the area, stopping frequently to point out interesting things along the way.

The massiveness of Carrizo

The top of Parkfield Grade. Eric coasted down the paved section for six miles.

Two days, 696 miles, 14hrs saddle time, with the big KTM averaging 47mpg
Awesome ride; being on the big katoom, how often and where were your fuel stops?

I’d love to convince myself to do this ride on my ‘05 gs but always worry about fueling and running this solo...( would love to have an OG tow me as a dirt newb)

Please share at your convenience

Thanks 'Tude,
I can get up to 280 miles on a tank.
SF to Coalinga - Gas.
Coalinga to Maricopa - Gas
Maricopa to Coalinga - Gas
Coalinga to SF arrived with 50 miles to spare.

Hollister (and King city) has gas as well. My GSA gets around 350 mi out of a tank on these roads.

Good point.

You need to know your range and plan accordingly. There aren't a lot of options close to the Plain.

The KLX needed gas more frequently than my big KTM.

Buck Island, Fiske Creek Road ...

Happy to report Buck Island is still there:

sunset from the top of Buck Island Road ... right to left, we figure that's Mt. St John, the Snow Mountain Wilderness and Hull Mountain along the horizon.

the gang: Cabrito, FlyingDutch73, dsjanssen (our fearless leader), Ms Saltwater (our fearless two-up rider), Spitfire44, Saltwater, non-BARFer David and bananachunks ...

Justin (?), our faux-turkey-hunting, Polaris-riding, gun totin', Miller Light and firewood and country-song-lyric supplying neighbor, being neighborly and enjoying our campfire on Saturday night ...

our fearless leader, enjoying the sunset on Friday night ...

on Saturday, dsjanssen lead the intrepid Spitfire44 and dragged the fearful SFMCjohn on a Fiske Creek Road expedition:

a view of Lake Berryessa from Fiske Creek Road ...

a view of Davis Creek Reservoir from Fiske Creek Road.

A silver lining to the bad fire they had up there recently is that Fiske Creek Road was in awesome condition thanks to the fire-break-building bulldozers they had up there fighting the fire, and I was able to explore Fiske Creek Road further than I ever have before.

eventually, however, fear did overcome me and I abandoned dsjanssen and Spitfire44 to continue exploring Fiske Creek Road on their own. they reported finding a pretty nice picnic/camp spot and some gnarly ruts, as well as some excellent adventure riding.

A view of Rd 40, Fiske Creek Road and Buck Island Road (the four-way intersection at the top of Reiff/Rayhouse) from Fiske Creek Rd ... here is a link to some fun history of Knoxville and Davis Creek Reservoir, and to the Natural History of McLaughlin Reserve, which I gather is the name UC Davis had given the area around Davis Creek Reservoir. big history of mercury mining, apparently ...

and, a view of a small rattlesnake. Saltwater saw a big one in our Buck Island campsite, but despite our best efforts we failed to get the pic.

and, a couple mapz:

Reiff Road to Buck Island from Morgan Territory/Knoxville Rd ...

Davis Creek Reservoir, the north half of Rd 40 from Hwy 16, to the four way intersection of Rd 40, Buck Island Road and Fiske Creek Road in the middle of the map, with Fiske Creek Road leading off to the lower right, toward Blue Ridge. I have no idea what Esparto Unified is, maybe the organization that put in the concrete picnic table that is reportedly out there somewhere ...?

all in all an epic outing. big thanks to our fearless leader, who got me off the sofa this weekend ...

Awesome pics John! That rattle snake was right under your bike!!

I only took a few pics, but it was a great ride up via Lake Berryessa, and back home through Lake County, St Helena, and Santa Rosa.

Saltwater and Mrs Saltwater on the big GSA

FlyingDutch73 on his sweet Tiger

Saltwater took this nice shot of our campsite

Here I'm trying to remember how to assemble my cot (it's been in storage for a few years) so many parts.

Saltwater made real food on his sick little wood stove

Spitfire44 on the Zero Ton bridge on his killer F800 GS

Can't wait for the next ride with these nice folks.

Are you talking about that picnic table at the bottom of Fiske where you have to go through a little hole in the hedges? That place is fantastically secluded for it being right off the trail. And I bet you're right, maybe Esparto Unified School district's table, a throwback when schools would take students on overnights in the wilderness.

Anyway, fun pics and looks like it was an epic time.

yes, you’re a better man than me, I’ve always chickened out before getting anywhere near the rumored picnic table on Fiske Creek Rd.

we need to find ourselves next to the same campfire this year! maybe a Fiske Creek campout, or Anthony Peak ...?

Not a better man, just more gullible or trusting when someone says "it's not bad"

And yes, sharing a campfire sounds great, the pics here and from the stoney thread looked like great fun.
