At first look, a bit hard to flat out say black or white, love or hate mixed with respect here.

Steroids & pot? OK actor with lots of screen charisma, very smart at milking the stupid. Dual Austrian & American citizenship by accident? Marrying a Kennedy/Shriver with no ulterior motive to get into politics? We're talking about American Camelot here people !! CA governator claiming to be better than Gray Davis on a technicality?? Above the law public behaviors (cars, motorcycles....) Abuse of executive power to pardon a corrupt buddy's son? Public figure and yet having a son with maid almost the same age of his own kid? Cheating and lying SOB ?

Hmmmm the more I think about this above list >>>> the hate much more outweighs the love and the respect !!!

We're all humans of course, but come on now. My

Arnold was a childhood hero of mine as a bodybuilder. Most movie stars, wich he is cheat on thier spouses, it's a Hollywood thing.

Arnold tried to wrestle the California beast of a system that was broken. Whether you agreed with his initiatives or not, I'll never forget the special election and his defeat. The dude tried really hard and he didn't need to at all. I'll never understand why he bothered being governor to be honest. I think he was trying to give back to a system and country that he felt gratitude toward. The Grey Davis recall was a pretty ugly episode in our history.

I like how he reduced vehicle registration fees immediatly after being elected. He pretty much cut through all the BS and said "DO IT, NOW"

Well, an important point to take into consideration with the bodybuilding thing is that he never lied about it. That shit was legal back when he was in the scene and he has not tried to hide that he used them.

Exactly. I think that was in 2005, was SO disappointing. His mind was in the right place, and those reforms (some now implemented, such as taking away district line-drawing away from the legislators themselves) are clearly good reforms.

Flawed man? Of course. But as others have said, a hero of mine growing up, and he is clearly a very smart, ambitious guy.

This. He has openly discussed his use of steroids.

He made smart business decisions all the way through. He saved and invested most of his bodybuilding monies instead of wasting it.

Well some of his chickens have recently come home to roost. The micro stamping law was signed by him, and now two major handgun manufacturers are pulling out of CA. And the ban on lead ammo in condor zones he signed was expanded to the whole state this year.

For all the money he made off of using hubs in his movies, he certainly wasn't kind to those who use them in real life.

He was a pretty good Governor. His embrace of fuel cell cars was kind of a disaster, but as a general rule, he was very good at recognizing that he did not have expertise in areas that needed work and hired consultants who were the best in the business at figuring out solutions. Unfortunately a very hostile and dysfunctional State legislature stopped him from actually solving much, but attacking the out of control costs from State Fund Workman's Comp was one of his hot button issues and he did accomplish reform there. The State is too fuxored on a State Assembly/Senate level to actually have one guy do much to fix it, much like the Federal Government is on the Federal Level. The dysfunctional nature of the machine is too deeply entrenched to have a single leader fix much of anything.

+1
Yep, agree
I admired his willingness to give it a go..... he kinda hit a wall with the indians and the prison unions

I don't know if it was all ego or a bit of naïveté, but he tried really hard to charm and force changes that the system just wouldn't allow. He thought he could straighten things out and bring everyone together in his smoking tents and such, but he eventually had to learn that those people simply don't want to work together.
