Parakeet

I tried a couple parakeets last year and both died in the first week.

The first died on the 3rd night. It stuffed its head into the covered food dish. I thought it ran out of oxygen. The second lasted 8 days and I guess it just fell off its perch.

Now I want to try again but I have no idea why, or what is the most likely reason, these birds died?

I am aware of teflon and any teflon is 20 years old. Not sure if there could be other common household toxins.

It might have been the water - old 5 stage reverse osmosis and well water, with super high manganese levels.

Both birds came from PetSmart - they did not have favorable reviews on birds in particular. They had a lot of birds though and none died in the store that I could tell during this time. I'd look for somewhere else this time though.

Anyway, I am expecting 9/10 this thing will die again. Anyone keep birds?

Paging Meandad.

Honestly dude, if you think the odds of a pet dying are 9/10 maybe you should pick a different pet. Like a pet rock.

Birds can be incredibly sensitive to stress, cold, etc. My friend growing up had an African Grey parrot. His littyle brother tormented that bird so that it pulled out all of his feathers and then died.

Where are you keeping it?

Should be away from the kitchen to some extent, away from drafts.

If you think it's the water, use bottled and change it daily. Mix in gravel with their food if it doesn't have it already. Give them a chunk of green leaf lettuce or something like that to much on as well.

If they died that quickly, something shocked them or they were already on their way out.

Also, don't buy from PetSmart.

Birds are sensitive, especially small birds, but they can also live 5, 10 years or more without all that much trouble.

Reach out to http://www.mickaboo.org/

They are an organization that does adoption for birds. They also have a bunch of classes and information on how to care for the birds and will help with everything so the bird won't die in a few weeks.

Don't buy from pet smart.

I got Kumo from Feathered Follies in Concord. They made me come in two or three times to hang out with her before they let me buy her. The store is full of bird people who are more than happy to answer any questions I have, and didn't at all seem like they wanted to just sell me a bird to make money.

Get the youngest one you can, they'll bond with you and be your little buddy for life.

Lots of household cleaners are toxic to birds. Any time I use something I'm unsure of I try to have the window next to her cage open so there's fresh air.

Good advice here. Keeping them out of drafts is vital. They are great pets.

Something about keeping a flying animal in a cage in your house doesn't sit right with me.

At our shop we have an adopted peach faced love bird. He looks a bit like a parakeet in size. He flew into the front office door one day and we kept him. He has PLENTY of out of cage time. Most of the time when someone is in the office he is out of his cage. It gets left open so he can come and go as he wants. He has his favorite people and our receptionist is tops. He will sit on her shoulder or snuggle up to her most of the day and she adores him. He has been here like 6 years. Life ain't all bad for a "caged" bird if they get their needs met.
