If this is a riding weekend then do this:

Start real early (like sunup from Cupertino) with a ride up 1 from Marin Co. to Leggit. Keep going north on 101 to Just north of Garberville where you can get on the Avenue of the Giants and take you time going through there. Stop and look at the big trees in the Humboldt Redwoods State Park. The go north a little more and stay somewhere in Ferndale. It's a cool little town off of Hwy 101 by a little ways. You'll probably need reservations on a weekend.

Day 2, ride Hwy 36. Out to Red Bluff and back. Trust me on this one. Don't ask questions, just ride it.

Or Day 2, if you're into hanging out. See the sights in Humboldt county or go for a nince long walk in the state park. It's not too far away.

Day 3- Long: Ride 36 to Red Bluff, take I5 south to 20. Take 20 to Clear Lake Oaks and turn south to Lower Lake, where you can pick up 29 down to the Napa Valley. Stay on Silverado Trail- don't take 29 through the valley. Just south of the City of Napa you can cut over to Hwy 12 west and hook up with 37 the 101 to go back south or head down to Vallejo and Pick up 80 back to the bay area.

Or Day 3: Go south out of Ferndale on 211 to Petrolia and ride any of the very little, poorly paved roads headed south, they all pretty much drop you off on 101. Head south.

Are you thinking of doing it solo?

Let me second boney's route recommendation. We did a
variation on it back in October. The coast offers a lot of
interesting stuff to see--well worth the effort. And you'll
love the ride from 1 to 101 (at Leggitt).

How to plot? I like to look through the maps and see what
looks good. But I use a GPS too and that makes on the fly
planning a bit easier (less folding and stuffing of maps--you'll
still want one as it's faster to get a general idea than the
GPS).

Enjoy your trip!
