Desolate isn't the word I'd use to describe that area. It is uninhabited, but not dreary, dismal, sad or forlorn.I'd more say it's typical Alpine scenery, lots of trees & rock, simply beautiful.

When were these pictures taken? I am SOOOOOO bummed I didn't get up there one last time before the snow started falling...I already can't wait until spring when they open again!!

OK here goes, we put a little trip together a month or so ago....we try to do these roads at least a couple times a year. usually, we head on up to don pedro<on hyw 120 south out of Sonora> on Friday night after work so we don't ride very far in the dark and take it kinda easy after work..but mostly we want to ride that first section of twisties hwy 120 starting out in the morning fresh 'cause they're "great" ..then it's on to Yosemite which is to say great scenery and more open sweepers..... from there all the way up to Tioga pass and down to 395 we stopped @ some casino next to mono ,the salt lake up there, it's worth checking out if you have never seen it's tall pillars of salt that surround some area's. and stayed overnight. then on Sunday rode back to 108 which is one of my all time favorite roads it's really tight starting out from the east and then mellows as you get closer to Sonora but in between i'd say you get 50-75 great corners or more though i have never counted them and all types from increasing to decreasing up and down shoot even some sideways i think ...then it was time to head back home....you could do this ride in a day<iron butt style but if you have the time and desire i'd say spend the weekend and even ride down-up & down 108 on Sunday ya gotta see it from both directions next spring i'll post a ride for sure ,so come join us

likely the pass is now closed, they close it with the first snow.......

the pass is indeed closed now. today i could theoretically gotten as far as kennedy meadows. however, i stopped at this point, about half way btwn strawberry and KM. the road was *very* slippery and the sky threatening so i wimped out and turned around. on the way back i took 108-49-132, which was warm, dry and all mine.
