Used Car -- When do you sell or drive it into the ground?

I've got a 2003 Jetta that just hit 120k

Runs fine, most everything works. 1 year old tires. Think it needs a net cat.

I'm at the point where I'm quickly going to get less and less for it selling used or trading it in. I dont want a car payment but I bought my place 2 years ago and I used a good amount of funds then so buying outright or used with cash isnt going to happen.

VW has 0% right for 36 months on diesel tdi cars which is what I want. Payment would be about $640 a month for 3 years Not sure if I can extend that to say 5 years and add a point or so once the 36 ends, probably not.

When you get up in the miles, when do you decide its not worth to sell and just drive it till it stops?

You just bought a house and you think adding a $650/month payment is a good idea?

Your grandfather lived in an era when 75k was getting close to a complete engine rebuild, at least.

My golden rule is to buy a cheap Honda with a manual transmission and drive it until the freakin wheels fall off.

It's really up to how much you value your moneys. A quick CL search tells me your car is worth ~4k. That's not going to have a huge impact on the price of a new TDI. So, I'd probably drive the Jetta until it was dead, then pick up the TDI. There's some weird psychology that goes on when you want a new car and are able to afford it...your subconscious will destroy the Jetta in about three months, necessitating the new ride.

2.0 non turbo. Engines are dinosaurs. I already did a water pump timing belt change at 85k...when surprise everyones watepump fails on these engines

Its fully loaded with leather. Only issue is the check engine light which I know means a bad cat. Trading it in would mean I didnt have to worry but I'll get hosed on a trade in.

Damn that's tough because my jetta is loaded with leather, heated seats, sunroof. Finding the same in a good under $10k would be tough I think. I'd have to REALLY step up the savings and no buy guns/ammo. I did just sell my moto for $7500...paid $8k for it 5 years ago, that was a good deal on my part. Didnt sell it to a Barfer

Or you could just keep your car and drive it.

Yep. It's at 235k now, racking up a hundred miles a day and a trip to Washington once a month.
