rumpofsteelskin buys a KLR

So I finally went ahead and bought the bike I've always wanted, much to the relief of everyone whose ear I've talked off describing how much I want it. Yes, it's the venerable Kawasaki KLR 650!

It's weird, though. It didn't look like the pictures at all, and the price was a little more than I thought it would be. Also, I couldn't find a single Kawasaki sticker on it. Still, it seemed to be in pretty good shape and all, so I decided to at least test ride it. Gosh, was I surprised when I did. It had a LOT more power than I expected. So much power that I occasionally felt that there was actually an extra cylinder in there. I asked the seller about this and he just sort of looked concerned.

Anyway, I know everyone has seen KLRs before and that they're nothing special, but I thought I'd post up anyway just 'cause I'm so pleased with my purchase. These are just some quick non-action photos. I'll try to take some more when I do some fire-road touring later this summer. And now, behold my beautiful 2003 KLR 650:

Yep. It had been ridden 2023 miles when I picked it up. It's amazingly clean, though, isn't it?

Perhaps I'll post some impressions of it when I've done some more riding. The transition from 600 cc I-4 to 998 cc V-2 is strange, but I like it. It's weird not having to shift all the time. The RPMs seem to magically stay low no matter what I'm doing, yet there's always emergency power available. Huh.

Plus I like the way it goes "WAAAAA!"

Yeah. I went from an F3 to a 929RR to a TL1000R and was still surprised at how you could just power around town in pretty much any gear. I recently sold my TLR and went back to a 600cc I4 though...

Cool buy.
