Talking Low Cost m/c Communications System

I just read the M.C.N. article on cheaper alternatives to Autocoms, Chatterboxes, etc..
They limit themselves to $99.00. The guy bought a couple of GMRS(these have the 5 mile range) radios for $34.00 from Wal-Mart.
So the major thing that the article focused on was the "Headsets". I will not go into all the details of the articles, but I will say to check out these two brands that he rocommended:
Sierra Electronics- IMC HS100 ($60.00). He says that the only one better, at this price point, is the 'RocketMate K06D ($63.00).
This one actually has a steel 'boom' mike that will fit into almost any full face helmet. The tester notes that all of the connectors are weatherproof and heavy duty, and allow you to use a radio, mp3 player, etc..
He also recommends that we get units with a PTT button as oppossed to VOX, because of the wind noise on m/c's.
Heres some phone #'s:
Sierra Electronics 800-338-6938
RocketMate 800-959-2899

Got a head set from Radio Shack. Kinda gross, you stick the earphones into your ear. The microphone can clip onto a collar.
It does Vox and button. Never tried it tho.

Y'know, looking at the Rocketmate/Klein website, they don't have anything that connected a MP3/radio to the K06D...

Thanks for the info Lefty I already have FRS/GMRS radios, so this is really useful than spending another $100.

Look again.
They sell an adapter for $29.00, the actual headset only costs $34, thus the total was $63.00.
go to rocketquality.com and then check out headsetusa.com for the technical specs..

OK I see. But looking at the PDF manual, you still can't hook up both the radio headphone and the radio at the same time... *shrug*

(Note, I'm not a complete radio newbie or anything... I know what I'm looking for.)

I've tried it, bad idea.

I have a good pair of Motorola FRS handhelds that I tried a Radioshack PTT headset with... not a good combo.

1.) For the one I checked, the PTT button is high on the cord and hard to get at when geared up. It sits right at your collar. Didn't use the vox option, too much wind noise held the channels open.

2.) Using PTT only, sound quality was toast at any speeds above 15 mph.

Just my .02
