Spent some time looking over the bike today. It definitely went through a full restoration at some point in the 90’s. Frame was fully painted, it’s got lots of nice stainless hardware on the engine and based on sticking a magnet in the spark plug hole it seems to have nikasil cylinders! Pulled the carbs off for cleaning and they don’t look terrible but the tank is full of varnish. I though it was rust but swishing some acetone around in there loosened up a bunch of it. Will probably need to do this several times to get the most of it out. It’s drying now and I’ll try to vacuum or blow more of it out before I do another round of acetone.

Plan is to finish cleaning the tank and carbs, get a new battery and try to fire it up. Previous owner didn’t have many details on the bike. Older gentleman who has owned it since 1999 and put about 10k miles on it. He is stopping riding and hadn’t started it in 4-5 years, but claimed it was running great at that time. Sparks plugs looked perfect so I believe him.

Once it’s running I’ll drain and replace all fluid and start going through the brakes and wheel bearing etc. super excited for this one!

My Dad bought a new 1971 Ambassador (757cc). He could have used the extra power of the Eldorado (and the extra gear).

But he made this work as an interstate traveler and loved it.

Thanks guys! I got it running today and put a couple miles on it riding around the ‘hood! It’s a beast and fun to ride. The tank still has crud in it so it’s coming off again for a soak in white vinegar. Next up I’ll be going through every nut and bolt on the chassis and inspecting brakes and wheel bearings. I changed the fluids today and they all looked great so the bike was loved. Also put in new battery and all the electrical works. Stoked!

although I'm thinking the MG in the movies were Ambassadors ...?

just imagine the Magnum Force-style outfits you could wear!

Just watched this movie again the other night. I couldn't tell what model the MG were. I did get a kick out of the bike that Harry tried to start on the ship deck and it was some Kawasaki twin or something.

The battery I got is smaller than the hold down cage was built for. I’ll make a new one that fits the battery.
