Except today, it was raining and Mr Policeman obviously didn't like the idea of sitting in the center divide on his momocycle waiting to give tickets out

This reminds me of a Drew Carey joke. He said, "Now that I'm making lots of money, I like to run stop signs in the rain. Cop-Do you why I stopped you? Me-Do you know why I ran the stop sign?"

Tharkūn, for real, why doesn't CHP get tough on HOV violations? One LEO could easily fine 10 violators per day. $6K/day would pay for itself.

It's very easy for motors to do, not easy at all for cars to do. Plus that time of day is the busiest call volume so we're usually busy or on our way to something

Another great ambassador. Thanks for making life so much easier for the rest of us. "Fuck you, I got mine" opens doors for everyone.

I'm not too worried about that.

Besides there are almost zero right now on the road, most of those 3 wheeled cars are only 2 seaters. Their footprint is pretty small.

There is one example, sckego. Another would be funding and highway planning. Caltrans counts cars, ya' know, in and out of HOV lanes. On the other hand, if one speeds and does not crash NOR cause another to change their normal driving, then speeding is victimless.

This may be an unpopular opinion (and from a motorcycle n00b at that), but I think the "diamond lanes" would be more effective if they were enforced in the manner in which they were initially devised. That is, putting multiple drivers in one car to reduce the number of cars on the road.

This would then imply that the following would not be allowed:

1) Cars with only one licensed driver. Kids don't count, adults without a drivers license don't count. Almost completely unenforceable though - CHP would have to stop people just check for licenses, which is ridiculous.

2) Exemptions for hybrids, electric cars, etc. The idea was to reduce congestion, and a car running on electricity takes the same space as a car running on gas or diesel.

3) Motorcycles wouldn't be allowed. Motorcycles are still a "one vehicle, one driver" thing (unless you have a passenger). Lane-splitting when conditions favor it do a lot to reduce congestion, but that doesn't require a designated lane.

Since enforcing any of these three is out of the question, then we should just abandon the whole idea of diamond lanes. That, or change the purpose of the diamond lane to reduce fossil fuel consumption instead of congestion, in which case #2 and #3 are both legit.

I mostly agree with you, but to be accurate, the oil embargo of the 1970s accelerated diamond lane installation to reduce oil consumption. The wording in many U.S. and State bills include words like "fossil fuel reduction" and "pollution reduction" when legislating HOV lanes. The additional reasons for HOV lanes besides fewer cars, has been around since back then.

I feel once you get a $500 HOV violation the odds of you doing again and again are slim. It's risk-reward as noted...just not worth the risk to save a few minutes.

That's why I ride a motorcycle!

Is an HOV violation a "moving" violation that goes against driving record and insurance?
