Warning/Rant about CL "Premium Dealer!" adds

If you look at CL, you've probably seen these add. They also state "Delivered to your Doorstep for only $189". I have noticed some ads put in "starting at $189"

So here is my experience with them ...

Add was a bike for $6495, 0 miles, the $189 to your Doorstep, call them up.

Guy says "Bike is $6995"
I point out ad says $6495
He says that's for the demo model
I point out ad says 0 miles
He ignores my statement and talks on

Oh, his phone area code is San Diego, another area code is Reno, and he is talking like he is in Las Vegas. Who knows.

So he goes over the OTD price ...
$6995 for the bike (already $500 more than the ad)
$369 for doc fees! (Holy crap!)
$495 for freight
$600 for setup (again, Holy crap!)
$250 to ship the bike to the Sonoma store (which is 2 hrs from my Doorstep)
$203 DMV fees
$630 CA taxes

$9569 OTD for a $6495 advertised bike. And I have to drive 4 hrs round trip to go get it.

I briefly ask about that $189 to my Doorstep thing vs. $250 shipping to a shop 2 hrs from my house. He rambles on about moving bikes around, and whatever, basically ignores my question/point.

So I ask him where is the bike located? (like I'd come get it vs. paying $250) He rambles on about various warehouses, different bikes in different places, shipping to the Sonoma store is the best option. Huh?

So I tell him prices/markups are crazy and he is doing false advertising and I wouldn't want to buy the bike from them and hung up.

Whew.

I guess I could have spent time trying to get crazy numbers down to almost sane numbers, but when they start with a $369 doc fee number, almost funny it is so absurd. And a $600 setup fee! Wow, that's a lot of setup.

Anyway, frustrating experience.

Looks like he's pimping bikes out of a Las Vegas showroom and spamming (casting nets) on CL in non-Vegas metro areas using fake-local 415 Google Voice phone numbers to give the appearance of being local to SF.

It's a living I suppose. Some chumps will fall for it.

there's a supermoto racer who goes by "hollywood" who is a fairly nice guy (including when I first met him at a trackday and had no idea who he was)

Oh the guy was super nice. Very friendly when he told me the doc fees were 369 dollars!!

I should have asked for a job doing their doc prep work ... they must pay that person about $700/hr!

You can't get a bike at the listed sale price locally either. When I was looking for a new bike, the freight+setup quoted by local dealers was much higher (almost $1,500-1,600) than what you shared. The DMV and sales tax will stay the same as well. If you expect to get the bike shipped, there will be a price for it and their price is actually better than using UShip, etc. The only unreasonable item I see is the $369 doc fee that definitely appears unusually high.

I was negotiating with them for a new bike a few weeks ago and even with shipping factored in, their price was better than those offered by local dealers. In the end, I decided to pick up a slightly used bike instead otherwise would have definitely bought from them as they had the best price for my bike.

And that is how they end up with numerous brand-new, previous-year bikes on the showroom on floor.

“Hollywood” probably lost his real-estate license....

Its dealer experiences like these that make Scott at Berkeley Yamaha / Honda such a stand out good guy. Total straight shooter with no BS or games when negotiating pricing

Its been over a year and I still can’t say enough good things aout my purchase experience.

Yea but we are talking about a guy in Vegas using that nickname. Vegas the land of the straight road, most guys on hardleys or stretched swingarms, and the ever present club patch that they get up in arms over when a place tells them no colours.
I can't wait to gtfo in June.

$1500 -$1600 freight+setup for what sort of sticker price? On a $10K bike an extra 16% for freight+setup is retarded.

When buying a bike or a car I don't even let them break down those numbers, I just tell them to give me the out the door number and if its reasonable and not too much over the sticker price after taxes we have a deal.

I remember recently shopping for a car and all the salesman had the same annoying routine. Asking me to sit down and look at the numbers then expecting me to sign some BS agreement that if we reach an agreed number I'll buy the car. First off I was just shopping and not sure what I wanted or now much they'd be willing to move. A few days of this and by the time I found the dealer and car I wanted I told the guy outside on the lot what my number was and suggested we not waste each others time. I got it for my offered number.
