When I say choke up, I guess I mean "down" the shaft. As in closer to the club head.

It's generally not the quality of the clubs when you're talking about irons. I'll flat out admit that I was hitting a cheap driver only 120-130 yards at first just thinking that I sucked. But then I had friends use it and they didn't hit much farther and these are guys that hit 220-250 every time with their driver. I was convinced it was just a super shitty club. So I managed to land a Big Birtha 10* for free and the first time I connected with it, I knocked it about 175 yards. After improving my swing, if I hit it right, I'm getting super close to 200. My problem is, I keep wanting to swing like a baseball swing and that's screwing my game up. I've been fighting it for a while now and making progress, bit it's still there a bit. My thing is, how in the hell are you going to get any real distance on your drives if you're just allowing the club to the do the work and not trying to muscle it at all? No matter how nice of a driver I've hit (borrowing other people's drivers...), I still don't hit it much farther than 185 or so. Of course, it gains a bit after that by rolling, but we're talking just the actual distance of the drive itself.

As for irons, I've seen good players (single-digit handicaps) hit my cheap irons way better than I'm hitting them. There's also plenty of videos on YouTube of good players playing with shitty irons and still hitting nearly the same score as with their $1500-2000 Pings or Callaways. It's generally not the irons...it's you. I wouldn't spend money on new clubs unless I was a pro player or actually had a handicap that denoted the need for new/fancier clubs. Most of your issues can just be fixed by correcting swing problems.

The first time I ever golfed was hilarious. Friend had been golfing for 3 years by that time. I hugely hooked a T shot into the woods. Hit a tree, bounced back on the fairway. Topped another worm burner which managed to skip across the arm of a lake.....back on the fairway. I Damn near beat my friend. He was looking like he was going to have an aneurysm

Choking up is 100% NOT going to help Rob.

For the baseball swing, some switch to left hand clubs, to learn the correct muscle memory.
A right handed player needs to pull more with the left, and let the right arm follow.

I'll be out in the desert, with all its critters, good rocks and bad, by the end of next week. Been a couple of years
