Funny thing is I'm still a smoker, (stupid I know), but the volume of butts on the streets in Amsterdam was off putting.

There are people that make a living harvesting cones from Giant Sequoia's, Redwoods and Conifer's by climbing up those huge trees.

What is special about the cones that makes them worth harvesting?

What a great article. Essentially (and I fully agree), the bureaucratic environment we wholeheartedly embraced has sapped opportunity and protected the wealth class. This is no surprise, but reading about it in The Atlantic is a large surprise.

I thought a lot of the data trends they showed were new and interesting to me. I've had an intuitive assumption on most of this since I was a teenager, but nice to see someone charting it. The relevance to San Franciso's wealth inequity and housing crisis is so clearly defined here. Sadly, most left coasters continue to think that MORE regulation is the cure.

Japanese Cartoons are really good. I can see why they're so popular. Watching Neon Genesis Evangelion now.

Totally spot on. We'd have these convo's before. I could dig up at least 30 posts or so I've done over the years on why (I think) housing is expensive in this state. It's what you said above...

I liked the licensing one. I have an auto brokers/ dealer's license (had it for 20 years) and it's the biggest joke of a test for licensing. Totally ridiculous...and yet, $800 to the DMV every year for it.

I don't have a huge taste for anime, but One Punch Man is Brilliant.

Yeah, I don't want to drag this down into a political thread, but clearly the party of Regulation and Government Control is not helping.

I learned that Sicily was settled by Carthaginians, Phoneticians, Greeks, Romans, Normans and more. Truly fascinating history.

Also learned that once the Romans copied Carthaginian ship designs they were able to field a competitive navy that was able to beat the Carthaginians. Then they sailed to Carthage (modern day Tunis, capitol of Tunisia) and obliterated it. They lit the city on fire, which took 16 days to burn. Then they spent the next year destroying any structures left down to the foundation. They burned every text they could find in an effort to erase any trace of the Carthaginians. Very little record of Carthage exists today.
