Filtering traffic in small towns

I got cussed out the other day by an old guy crossing the road on the other side of the street. The fellow stopped halfway across the street and started waving his arms, screaming and pointing at me, gesticulating "NO" with other hand/arm signals. All of this because I rode past stopped traffic to get to the line at a signaled 4 way in town. I've noticed that some riders (not all) sit in traffic like other cars around here, I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong... What's the general consensus?

Did you ride on the shoulder or cross the center line to get up front? Both are no no's. It's done frequently here in the big city but I would imagine someone not appreciating it in a small town.
OTOH, the old coot is crazy to make such a fuss.

Fair enough. No I wasn't going in oncoming lanes, and basically 1st gear idling past stopped traffic. I figured I wasn't doing anything wrong and the guy was being a kook, but I just wanted to make sure that I had a good understanding of the laws/customs in California. All my riding experience is in the midwest, southern US, and Europe. Thank you for the input everyone.

Don't engage!

If what you are doing is not illegal, ignore them and ride away as fast as possible. Engaging will only enrage them more.

I often filter to the front of a 2 lane left-turn light onto a highway on-ramp. Once, a driver in a Texas plated truck screams and shouts "hey, buddy, what you're doing is illegal." Then he proceeds to race me and try to cut me off. Good thing he drives a truck and not a Tesla.

The point is that filtering to the front is not illegal. I filter at that intersection hundreds of times. Once, I stop between a police and a sheriff. Neither the police nor the sheriff gives me a second look.

Even if what you're doing is illegal but no harm done, ride away and do not engage. They are not the law.

Agreed. Do your legal thing.
Screw the whiner.

Welcome to my shit list for the generalization.

There are plenty of boomers that ride and are cool as hell
Your post is bigoted. I know your searching for a chuckle but social accepted protocols should include calling out old people like me. No hard feelings. Just pointing it out for reference. Your parents would agree. LOL

When in Rome...

Assert your rights as far as you can/will protect them.

Here in the SF Bay Area, have seen a marked improvement in acceptance of filtering-to-the-front, as well as lane sharing in freeway traffic.

However, when I'm in the mythical State of Jefferson, quite often will just sit back instead of work my way to the front.

...and do as the Romans do.

The further you get away from the bigger cities locals see this as wrong.
The law has your back , just pick and choose what you'll fall on your sword for.
The Rome law can keep you from being run up a flag pole.
