My new 1990 Yamaha FZR 400

I picked up this beauty from a local Yamaha enthusiast. He had 2 FZR 400's + 2 FZR 400 bare frames in his garage! It was really cool meeting a fellow rider who was passionate about his bikes. He also hooked me up with a bunch of spare parts and a service manual.

During my search for a bike, I learned that smaller displacement inline 4's are hard to come by in the US. It's either a Yamaha FZR 400, Honda CB-1, or import a grey market bike. People said this was due to low demand, not enough torque, and emissions, but I figure bring us the new Kawasaki ZX-25R, and we'll see (not happening though according to a local Kawasaki rep). I digress.

The sweet sound from an inline 4 is just pure joy, and the linear power band is predictable. I could go balls out on this FZR, not break the law and learn new skills. The D&D exhaust tone is fantastic, a little too loud depending on the time of day, but perfect when craving some raw gut shaking vibration from the exhaust.

I'm going to do some restoration over the coming weeks. Polishing the paint, metal surfaces, and plastics. Also going to paint the controls back to black, adding a headlight modulator, brake LED flasher and manual radiator fan switch.

Nice find. The 1990 ones were awesome.

I've owned 3 FZR400's and put 10's of thousands of miles on each of them. They never overheated. I don't see the point of putting on a radiator switch.

I was practicing low speed drills in a parking lot and the bike temp gauge went to the red. If I rode around though, the temperature was normal.

Did your FZR's temp gauge ever go high during low speeds?

Hmm. I don't recall seeing it in the red, but it has been a long time.

That is such a great bike, always dug the white/red and the spar frame.

Wring it out and enjoy.

First, make sure the fan is going on. If the fan is working, it shouldn't go into the red.
