what everyone needs to understand is that my dad was provided with very little information, DUE TO ME NOT GIVING IT. This doesn't make my dad an idiot and I was only arguing back because people were bagging on him w/o good reason. I'm sorry that you think he is an idiot because when he went to school in the 70's he was taught that 3 cylinder engines were no good... however in his class at cal poly I'm sure they weren't in regards to putting one in a sport bike. My dad having that information back then and not being up to date on all the triples that have been put out doesn't make him dumb or whatever, just he doesn't care enough to spend his time reading up about all of the bikes out. It makes me stupid for not showing him all the information about the triple. I'm sure if I show him the schematics for the 675 I'm sure his mind would change, however he just hasn't been shown that. And since he hasn't spent years of his life in the mechanical engineering behind a 675 triple, he doesn't know. Again, that makes him uninformed, not stupid... learn the difference.
I think the part that you're missing is that we're not talking about the 675, we're talking about a good 40 years of racing history with triples. When your dad was in school, there were quite a few triples on the market already and most of them were fast as hell beating all the twins and i4's at the time. Then there's the fact that BMW used them for a long time and if anyone can make an extremely boring bike that will run forever, it's BMW.

Great thread. My favorite when people come on, spout some stuff and then go into super-defense mode and have nine posts in a row spewing vitriol and corrections to a bunch of different posts that weren't serious in the first place.

It's more fun to say it the other way.

I'm not tryin to be a dick but that's how it appears when you throw out a blanket generalization with very limited basis in fact and continue to get defensive and (seemingly) hot under the collar about people talking sh*t and making fun. Just try to relax and have a good time and you'll be fine here.

You didn't help your case with your comment about your dad's BA in engineering either.

I was having fun retorting back though. most of the bagging was really weak and easily defended... I am not offended or upset or hot under the collar. I was having fun.

Ease up, young fella! I didn't call your dad stupid. I simply pointed out, in response to your accusing someone of trying to speak with authority while knowing less than your dad, that he (if you quoted him correctly) was guilty of the same thing: coming on as an authority, while not stopping to think that the people who produce three-cylinder bikes might know more than he did.

The only stupidity here was in your replies to the people who pointed out the flaw in your quoting him as an authority because he was a "degreed Engineer (not mechanical)." As you get more years under your belt, you'll learn to appreciate why engineers are the butt of so many jokes, and maybe you'll appreciate the sarcasm of the replies. Listen to the answers of the Car Talk guys when they get a call from someone who quotes an engineer. Don't take it personally.

This thread was doomed from the get-go. I had a feeling it would leed to dad-dissing nonsense. Shrug it off, kid.

Now after reading through this entire thread, reading the arguments, the backlashes and intrigue, it brings me all back to this very poignent statement you YOURSELF made Squirrls.^^^

It appears to me that this is exactly what you did in the very first post you made.

In the long run, this next statement must be made very clear to you!
