Moderna coronavirus vaccine shows 'promising' safety and immune response results in published Phase 1 study, but more research is needed

Interesting that the symptoms effect such a high percentage when so many are asymptomatic to the virus, unless they were forcing a response even among people who would normally be asymptomatic.
So the Moderna vaccine has no viral component except a snippet of RNA, copied from coronavirus, which is translated by the body into spike protein fragments. This spike protein fragments are chosen because they produce antibodies that are particularly effective at neutralizing virus. Not all antibodies the body makes to Covid are that effective. Many scarcely inconvenience it, but these are really a gut punch to the viruses ability to bind ACE receptors and get into the cell.

There are some special concerns, not encountered in traditional vaccines.

Viral RNA may trigger cytokine surges by waking a particularly mean guard dog in the Complement arm of the immune system, TLR. That may be where the side effects came from.

Direct RNA vaccines change the whole kinetics of the response. Normally a viral infection builds at a rate that gives the antibody factories, B cells, a shot at timely and proportionate response, as well as the cellular arm, T-cells, neutrophils and macrophages. There's some choke points and some negative and positive feedback loops.

RNA vaccines get the body to make pure spike protein so the immune system can make the best possible antibodies. The liver is the body's main protein factory. It's a huge organ and will make about as much spike protein as you can handle, as quick as you like, and potentially, too much more.

It's like you want to get your burgers cooked in an hour, how much gasoline do you use on the charcoal? Do you pour it on in increments, how much, how often, or maybe a slow drip?

It's going to take some tweaking to figure out the who's, how's, when's, and how much's.

Many actually appear ill, not just worried. About 15-20% of our tests are pre-ops, and the occasional asymptomatic positive shows up there. Doesn't seem to jibe with a high asymptomatic rates, dunno.
Where are the asymptomatics? Why would they want a test, they feel fine.

We are not doing 100% population testing like the rumors of other countries that are doing much better than us. Are we doing any truly random sample population testing? The data is poor if we don't get better with testing.

New cases reported in the United States on Wednesday nearly matched the single-day record, which was set 5 days earlier. On a week-over-week basis, new cases are up 23.3%

Texas, Florida and California recorded the highest number of new cases yesterday - each more than 2x the number in Georgia, which had the 4th highest

A similar pattern was evident worldwide: the United States, Brazil and India each recored at least 2.5x as many new cases as South Africa and at least 4.6x as many as Mexico

The rate of new daily infections per capita continues to rise in the United States, and has doubled in the past 3 weeks (based on a trailing 7-day moving average)

Florida, Arizona and Louisiana have the highest rates over the past week; each is more than 2x the national average

Twenty states recorded their highest new daily infection rate (trailing 7-day moving average) to-date yesterday, and 3 others did so on Tuesday. Conversely, twenty-one states are more than 1 month past their peak new infection rates

The United States trails only South Africa on this measure, among the thirty countries with the most total cases

6 in 10 United States residents now live in a state we rank as of "high concern", based on our model that weighs new infection, case growth, hospitalization and test-positive rates. A week ago, this was 4.5 in 10

Test volume continues its ascent: tests per capita in the past 7 days are up 13.7% from the week prior and 54% from one month earlier. The test-positive rate remains below the 10% desired maximum (per the World Health Organization)

This rate has been increasing over the past month, however, this increase appears to be easing over the past week

The United States testing per capita ranks 3rd highest worldwide over the past week, among the 30 countries with the most total cases

The United States overall and 38 states are testing at a rate higher than the minimum rate suggested by Harvard public health scientists

Thirty-eight states reported test-positive rates for the past 7 days below the 10% desired upper limit

Deaths with the coronavirus, on a 7-day moving average basis, have been slowly increasing for the past week

While this should be expected, following the 5-week long spike in new cases, they have been increasing at a slower rate than new cases

The death rate per case in the United States is now down to 3.88%, which is 15th among the thirty countries worldwide with the most total cases; the United States ranks 6th among these countries in deaths per capita

It's stupid clowns like this who are really helping the pandemic flare.

Georgia governor suspends all local mask mandates, encourages but doesn't require masks for residents

WTF is he thinking? Let the local officials handle their own situations, if their citizens don't like it, they can change the leadership in a few months.

Chinese executives get ‘pre-test’ injections in vaccine race

“Giving a helping hand in forging the sword of victory,” reads an online post from SinoPharm with pictures of company leaders it says helped “pre-test” its vaccine.

... an “inactivated” vaccine made by growing the whole virus in a lab and then killing it ...

“The idea of people willing to sacrifice themselves ... is pretty much expected in China,” said Yanzhong Huang, a global health expert at the Council on Foreign Relations, a U.S. nonprofit organization.

It would not be the only shortcut China is taking. In late June, the government gave special approval for the military to use an experimental vaccine made by another company, CanSino Biologics, skipping the final testing needed to prove if it really works.

It looks to be true and is in line with what I see

Week over week growth in those states are relatively flat.
