Central Coast Weekend ride.
Just back from an overnight to the Central Coast with BARFers rubba and ratpick. Not much to report but plenty of pics.
I left Sacramento late Friday afternoon and, as usual, cut Southwest across the California Delta to avoid I-5 or 1-80. The Delta vineyards are starting to lose their leaves but still plenty of red and gold color to enjoy. ![]() Levee roads on Ryer Island. ![]() Goats doing some levee maintenance. ![]() Windmills dot the Montezuma Hills south of Rio Vista ![]() Sacramento River just south of Rio Vista ![]() Last edited by Map8; 11-20-2007 at 10:51 PM.. |

Saturday was a mix of inland valleys and coastal mountains as we work our way south to our destination of Cayucos (k-eye-yu-coz) near Morro Bay. Not a long day by any measure at just over 200 miles but we enjoyed perfect weather and empty, remote roads surrounded by beautiful scenery. Even Hwy 1 was practically empty for the short stretch between the west end of Nacimiento-Fergusson Road south to Cambria. Fantastic ride every inch of the way.
rubba (left) and ratpick successfully avoid the paparazzi on Carmel Valley Road. ![]() Another view from Carmel Valley Road. ![]() Taking a break in Los Padres National Forrest. ![]() |

We encountered some of the most spectacular views of the coast I have ever seen due to the low fog just lapping at the cliffs and Hwy 1. At times you couldn't see any water for several miles and had the impression of riding of above the clouds on the edge of the world.
Looking north from Nacimiento-Fergusson Road. You can just see Hwy 1 clinging to the cliffs. ![]() More of same. ![]() The view to the south. See what I mean about the edge of the world? ![]() Our descent toward Hwy 1 from the mountains. ![]() Last edited by Map8; 11-20-2007 at 10:53 PM.. |

rubba went a ways down the road to take some pictures of your humble reporter...

First of many Santa Rosa Creek Road photos.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() End of Saturday. The only dangerous encounter all day was ducking the beer caps that rubba managed to remove with the bottom of a plastic cigarette lighter. The caps come off at tremendous speed and there is no way to predict their trajectory. Juvenile fun for sure but it does make the beer taste better when you know you could have lost an eye or chipped a tooth. Last edited by Map8; 11-20-2007 at 11:00 PM.. |

Sunday morning we headed inland on Hwy 41 to ride back north on some of best, and least traveled, roads in the state. Hwy 58, Hwy 229, a perfect slice of Hwy 41 and the Indian Valley, Peachtree, Hwy 25 trifecta.
Serpentine section of Hwy 229 ![]() The old turns three and four at Laguna Seca...er...more of Hwy 229. ![]() rubba on 229. ![]() More of the above. ![]() Yet again, rubba on 229. ![]() Your humble reporter aboard the time machine. ![]() |

Indian Valley Road.
![]() Another view of Indian Valley Road. ![]() No pictures of Hwy 25 as my picture taking hand was busy holding the throttle open and failing to wipe the grin off my face. I leave you with this: DOGBOY WANTS YOU! to ride the Central Coast. ![]() ![]() END |

Bravo!! Excellent photos of some very tasty roads! I love Nacimiento-Fergusson Road.
There are a ton of dirt roads off the peak of it that are great for exploring...if you're into that kinda thing. And you're right about things being more fun when you know they can hurt you... Thanks for sharing a great trip! WoodsChick

Man, who said you could photograph our secret roads?! AND post names and locations on the web?! If I had that surfer mentality.....I'd.....nevermind! Cool roads with low traffic and great scenery, welcome to paradise!

That's awesome, Steve. Love Santa Rosa Creek Rd. Looks like we stopped at some of the same spots too. We took the clock-wise loop last year. I want to go back down for a steak at Bubba's this Spring.
