Ride Report: Highway 36

I took a ride up to Highway 36 on Saturday. I was intending to ride the full length from Red Bluff to Fortuna, but weather & poor road conditions had me turning back. Even so, its a great road, the scenery is excellent, and I was able to take some halfway decent pics:

From my home, its about 1-1/2 hours riding up Highway 99, through the valley, to Red Bluff. Its straight and butt numbing, but its scenic in spots. I didn't stop to take photos of the Sutter Buttes, which pass by to the west, the numerous farms, or the graving cattle dotting the rolling hills approaching Chico.

I did stop to take a photo of the coastal mountains to the west. There's something about this time of year, when the hills turn green and the mountains are dusted with snow... Summer's better for riding, but the scenery is better now.

Here's that cliche'd photo that it seems everyone that rides HWY 36 seems to take. Any why wouldn't they stop? There aren't many signs that promise 140 miles of twists & turns, and this must be among one of California's most epic motorcycle roads. So a stop & a photo are definately warranted.

I made a friend about 10 miles into the road. Coming along at a respectable clip, I found this guy running across the highway unattended. In fear that he was going to get run over, I pulled over and checked his collar. No tags. There was a side road and the dog was friendly enough, so I slowly rode up the side road toward a small housing development, finding the dog was more than happy to run alongside me on my bike. It wasn't long before I came across a resident walking her dog. She recognized him as belonging to one of her neighbors, said she'd drop him by, and, good deed done for the day, I was happily heading back out on my way.

This really is a great road. The opening 20 miles have you riding through oak studded rolling hills. The road demands respect, with weird cambers and elevation changes that'll unload the suspension. But its so rewarding to ride quickly.

And you need to be careful. There are areas where the scenery tries to take your eyes off the road.

There are some great sweepers too.

This is what I mean about respecting the road. You ride through a series of corners... a pace of about 60-80 feels so right, and find yourself faced with this...

Which quickly becomes this...

To this. Its a weird corner with a sudden drop that'll easily put you in the oncoming lane if you're not prepared for it.

A great view of the next portion of the road in the distance. The road climbs into the mountains with fast, easy sweepers.

And close to the top, you can see where you just came from.

Start getting high and it starts getting cold.

And the road's not in as good shape. Gravel was all over the place and where it wasn't it was very slick in spots that weren't getting sun. Still I pushed on, thinking I'd see what it looked like in Mad River.

And 80 miles in, it started to rain. I left my rain gear at home and knew that I could return to Red Bluff on fumes but not if I pushed onward much further. A shame, but Fortuna will have to wait for another day.

I stopped for one more photo on the way out. Thanks for looking.

Great pix from a great ride! It's been a few years since I was up on 36, the scenery is downright spiritual.
