Elbacalao squids it up in SD and TJ

So last week I did my first ever solo road trip. On Monday I road from San Mateo to a gig at Pomana College in East LA. For the most part I used a route recommended to me by MrCrash...Thank you Mike! It was a blast. Basically I rode 101 south to Gilroy, to Route 25 to Route 13 which took me to King City. I then hopped back on 101 S for 66 miles to Atascadero where I took route 41 East for about 11 miles to route 58. That led me to McKittrick where I hopped onto route 33 all the way to Maricopa. I then hopped on route 166 to Interstate 5, where I took that through the grapevine to East on I-210 into Claremont, where Pomana college is. The next day I rode down I-15 to San Diego. I think all in all the first day was 450 miles in 8.5 hours.

So anyway...on with the pics. I didnt take as many as I would have liked to. The first day I had to be in LA for a 3:00 soundcheck. I left at 6:00am and arrived at 2:30. Enough time to check into the hotel, shower and then jump into the van that took us to the college.

The first blurry pic courtesy of my digitally challenged mother...me leaving my apartment at 6:00am.

The second is of me gassing up before I hit Route 25.

oppsss pics failed let me try that again!

Me leaving the apartment. I purchased the Cortech 21 liter tank bag for this trip and just LOVE it. I also strapped a well packed REI backpack onto the tail. pic is courtesy my digitally challenged mother, who was in town visiting for easter weekend.

Route 25 started kind of boring, but after I got through Hollister, it became a really great ride, with nice twisties and open sweeps.

route 13 had really rough surface, otherwise it would have been more fun. I was only on it for about 15 miles until I hit the major metropolis of King City. I gassed up there before jumping onto 101, but not before I stopped and took this pic...

66 miles down 101 and then onto Route 41. Once I was a few miles out of Atascadero, the road became beautiful for fast paced riding. Not too many twisties, but some nice easy to see sweeps.

I then hopped on Route 58, by far the best of all the roads I would ride. Not sure of the exact mileage but I think I was on it for around 60ish miles. It had everything: technical twisties, long sweeps, some amazing straightaways with some dragon tail hills. Just an amazing road. As its springtime...the mountains I cut through were covered by these amazingly dense yellow flowers. I wish I had stopped to take pics. At one point on 58 I also passed by a field where I saw a bunch of little kids on 50cc dirtbikes having a blast. I wish I had stopped to take a pic of that too, as they were cute. I was kind of hauling ass at the time and just decided to continue on though... here's an ok pic of 58. It doesnt really capture the best the road has to offer. this was the only state route on which I passed another sportbike. Closer to McKittrick, I passed two sportbikers heading west.

As beautiful as Route 58 was, once I passed through the mountains, which I believed are called Temblor range, the scenery became ugly. As I hit McKittrick and headed onto Route 33. I saw nothing but oil rig after oil rig. It was a stark contrast to the beauty I had just seen. I tried to get off of 33 as quickly as possible. I also started hitting more traffic. Mostly trucks.

I gassed up in the town of Taft and then continued on 33 to Maricopa. I was expecting it to be a real town like Taft was. You know, businesses and people and gas stations, restaurants...well...its basically a ghost town.

In case one didnt get tired of seeing the thousands(literally) of oil rigs on route 33...the Maricopa townsfolks..I'm assuming all ten of them...decided they needed a monument to one...If you could read the little white plaque, you'd see it mentioned that this oil rig was built of wood during WW2 due to the metal shortage.

So from Maricopa it was a straight shot down Route 166 to I-5. On my R6, all the way down to I-5, I hadnt felt any fatigue at all. I was just imbibing the scenery and the riding. However once I hit the super slab, it was so boring that my lower back felt fatigued and my butt started feeling sore...so I learned how to stand on the pegs while going...well while going really freakin fast. Not that big of a deal, but it did bring relief. Having the tank bag stuffed was great, I spent alot of time just laying on it, which kept my wrists free. They never felt fatigued. I-5 to I-210 and I made it to the Double Tree Inn in Claremont. My room was ground floor and I parked the moto less then 15 feet from my patio. Yeah the room had a patio.

San Mateo to Claremont, 450 miles. 8.5 hours.
