Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska ride report

So I decided to go for a little ride on the FJR. Thought I should share some photos of the trip.

My daughter lives in Omaha and she had my granddaughter a month ago, so I needed to get out there and meet her. On April 4th and 5th I competed in the Southwest Police Motorcycle Training and Competition in Las Vegas. Seemed like a no brainer to haul the FJR down with the police motors and just leave from there to trek out to Omaha. I had seen lots of ride reports from southern Utah and have been waiting to get a chance to ride the area myself.

Left home Thursday morning with the two police bikes and the FJR all loaded and ready to roll. Took about 8 Ĺ hours to get to Vegas. The competition was held at the Suncoast Casino. Las Vegas Metro PD was hosting the event and they did an excellent job on the venue. They had taken over an entire parking lot and had everything well organized. When I arrived I got a good parking spot, checked into my room, then tracked down 5Mary4 and 5Mary5 who had a rented motorhome as home base for the competition. They also had lots of cold beer so we spent the evening meeting and greeting other riders, shooting the shit, and generally having a good time. (Thanks for the beers guys ) My partner arrived with his family late in the evening.

Friday all day was practice time on the course. We unloaded the bikes and tore it up. Practice was open from 0900 to about 1800 hrs. There were 155 riders entered in the competition, so at times there were pretty long waits to get into the practice patterns or onto the actual course. There was one pattern I was struggling with so I spent a bit of time getting it down. My girlfriend arrived late in the afternoon so I had a cheering section. We got to meet motor officers from Nevada, Oregon, New Mexico, Utah, Texas, and various parts of California.

Saturday was the competition and the first rider started about 0730. It took until nearly 1700 to get all the riders through the individual course twice. While riders were running the individual course, the rest of us could take part in the team ride (4 riders working through sets of patterns), the pair ride (two riders strapped together by a tether and negotiating a tight course), and the slow ride (individual riders try to take as much time as possible to negotiate a simple out and back pattern).

Each rider got two runs on the course for the individual competition. The two rides were added together and then averaged for a best time.

My first run. One of the two cones I hit cost me second place.

My second run

My partner's runs. He won first place in the Road King category.

Our team ride runs. There was an 18" tether between the bikes. Break the tether and its a DNF.

Our best run was 14.09 seconds I think 5Mary4 and 5Mary5 ran a 16.21 to win the BMW pair ride.

When it was all over, my partner had first place and I had third in the Road King category. Together we took third in the pair ride. 5Mary4 and 5Mary5, along with their teammates took home a stack of trophies in the BMW class. The guys from Wichita Falls Texas kicked ass and took 1st through 3rd in the HD Electraglide class.

My girlfriend and I hung out all day Sunday and then we each left on Monday. She flew home and I started my ride.

First stop was Zion National Park. I took I15 north into Utah and then highway 9 into the park. Wow, some incredible scenery. Iíd seen pictures, but up close and personal it just knocks your socks off. There were picture opportunities everywhere I looked. It was hard to concentrate on riding when it was so beautiful.

I rode through Zion for a while and then headed east on highway 9 to get to highway 89 which took me up to Bryce Canyon National Park. Once again the views were breathtaking. It was a Monday in early April so there were hardly any people around and I kind of felt like I had the place to myself. I was stopping so often to take pictures that I finally gave in to the Utah no helmet law and left the lid strapped to the bike for a while as I rode through the park (what a squid.)

Once I was done with Bryce I took off for highway 12 and then to highway 24through Capitol Reef National Park and then to Goblin Valley State Park where I was going to camp for the night. Highway 12 and highway 24 are spectacular roadways with incredible sights. Elevation got as high a 9500 feet which put me in the snow a little bit but the road was clear. If the riders in southern Utah started their own forum (SURF) they would have some great roads to talk about and their moto photo page would be incredible!
