Officers Down In Oakland; Four Officers Shot, Suspect Dead

Posted: 1:37 pm PDT March 21, 2009Updated: 4:52 pm PDT March 21, 2009
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Four police officers were severely wounded and a suspect killed in two separate shootings Saturday in East Oakland's troubled MacArthur Blvd. neighborhood, authorities said.

Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason said the two officers shot in the initial incident were in critical condition at Highland Hospital, The condition of the two other officers who were shot in the second related shooting was not immediately known.

There was a chaotic scene outside the Oakland Highland Hospital’s emergency department with officers hugging and crying.

Authorities said the deadly spree began with a traffic stop at 74th Ave. and MacArthur Blvd. at about 1:15 p.m.

Two officers were wounded at that location, according Oakland Fire Department spokesman David Brue. Their names and medical conditions were not immediately known.

A short time later, a SWAT shot it out with a suspect that had barricaded himself in an apartment at Hillside St. and 74th Ave. Two officers were wounded in that shootout.

“We received information as to the whereabouts of where the suspect was,” Thomason said. “We had SWAT officers go into that building and that’s where the shooting took place.”

Thomason would not confirm that there was only one suspect involved but he did say there was no ongoing search for anyone else related to the shooting.

My deepest sympathies, OPD. Hang in there!

RIP Heroes

Just like that, we go into battle, never knowing if we are to return home at the end of our shift. What may have been a routine stop, quickly turned into a murder of two motors. Two highly skilled members of OPD. At that moment, as others turn to seek shelter, other warriors swarm the area seeking for their brothers’ killer. Unfortunately, 2 more heroes were murdered before the killer himself was ultimately killed. A sad day for Law Enforcement and their families as well as the community they laid down their life for. We will ride there to honor them in a short while this I am sure of. Let us always remember that they are heroes and died protecting the community! RIP my brothers! :rip

Please say they didn't die. Only reported on CBS that they were killed.

None of them made it. :(
One of the two motors was a sergeant.
:rose Godspeed, officers. Godspeed. :rip :rose
:rose OMG a terrible, horrible event!! My & my families prayers will go out to them & their family/friends tonight. I feel so sad for our LEO brothers & sisters. Godspeed for the Heroes.

We need to set up a charity or something for kids/etc. A ride too should be formed. :rose :rip :|

WOW..Terrible news, I was reading this and had chills running thru my body..

R.I.P..

Oakland motors are very cool. I always get a wave from them and they pass my work frequently in tight formation around the long sweeping turn on Coliseum Way. It's an awesome sight.

The most recent story I've read says they are in critical condition but another one said they all didnt make it. I hope they didnt die.

Godspeed, such a tragic and wasteful loss. My deepest sympathies to their families and loved ones.

Not "down" as in "crashed", "down" as in "shot".

The subhuman creature responsible--apparently not an endangered species--was euthanized on the spot by SWAT officers.

The latest from KTVU.

My best to the officers and families...
