Spring time on Western Mine/Ida Clayton Rd.
With the dizzying spring green the back roads have been a real feast for the eyes lately. Last Wednesday my buddy and I decided to take in the splendor of Western Mine/Ida Clayton Rd., 11 miles of lightly traveled dual sport heaven.
Link to ride route Our route ![]() At sunrise the Sacramento Valley was clear and warm, with the Sierras visible in the far distance. ![]() Heading up Pleasants Vly. Rd. to our rendezvous spot there was already plenty of nature's eye candy on display. ![]() ![]() 128 along Putah Creek was inviting as usual. ![]() And the glory hole spillway was still topping over around 9". ![]() A quick pit stop before heading up Lower Chiles Rd., Pope Valley, and Butts Canyon to Middletown. ![]() ![]() A couple of miles south of Middletown we turned off Hwy 29 onto Western Mine Rd. Let the fun begin! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() A mile or so after the pavement resumes, an unnamed dirt road forks to the right with a sign announcing the Trout Farm. This is a must-do side loop through lush redwood forest. It rejoins Ida Clayton after a mile or two. ![]() ![]() ![]() Back on Ida Clayton the road wound through more dense woods before opening up and beginning a steady descent down to Hwy 128. Along the way we ate up luscious views of waterfalls, Mt. St. Helena, vineyards, and hilltop views. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() continued . . . -Bill |

More . . .
![]() Back down on 128 we headed south to Calistoga . . . ![]() . . . and to a feast of a different kind, Buster's ribs! ![]() With full bellies and big smiles we enjoyed 128's pleasures on our way back home. Life is good. ![]() -Bill |

There's nothing like California in the spring. Great pictures.
