A great pairing: Cool weather and wine country back roads

Refreshing fall like weather had me lusting for some favorite wine country roads, so yesterday it was time to take the GB500 out for a nice loop.

Link to google map of route

My route:

Passing Lake Solano the scenery had me taking a moderate pace, the better to soak in late summer's sights.

Then it was around Berryessa and on to Lake Hennessey and Silverado Trail.

Crossing over to St Helena I headed out on my first special treat, Spring Mountain Rd., 12 miles of wonderfully curvy and scenic back road with lots of deeply shaded woods, constant twists, beautiful roadside views and steady climbing to a summit. At the top it crosses into Sonoma County and changes name to St. Helena Rd. After a long mostly single lane downhill it ends at Calistoga Rd.

I took Calistoga Rd. north to Petrified Forest Rd. and on to Calistoga. Gotta stop one of these times and check out the petrified forest.

Heading past Calistoga to Hwy 29 it was time for special treat #2, Old Lawley Toll Rd., a short but fantastic 3-1/2 miles loaded with fantastic scenery as well as bumps and pot holes. It even has a log barn.

Did I mention it has amazing views?

Old Lawley rejoins Hwy 29 right at the start of the super twisty section. I turned right and rode up and over into Middletown for lunch at Perry's.

After lunch I headed for home via Butts Canyon Rd. and Pope Valley. It was a a fun ride as always, but like the parched vegetation I'm ready for the dry season to be over and the first rains to mark the end of summer.

Awesome pics! Beautiful. As a new rider and new to California, I’m hoping to ride these roads someday.

That's the winner to my eyes.

Bill, I've been looking for a new loop up that way and you've pointed me to it.

Thanks for posting.

Thank you TWT, but my day rides pale in comparison to your far flung adventures!

Thank you, glad I could be of service! My recommendation is when coming from the Bay Area, avoid Hwy 29 heading up the Napa Vly, too much traffic. Instead take Silverado Trail and cross over to 29 only as needed.

Ha ha, it was the eruption of nearby Mt. St. Helena 3.4 million years ago that scared the crap out of those trees and "petrified" them.

Thanks Budman. Yesterday the sky was so clear and sparkling I couldn't resist another ride, this time with a buddy and his CB400F over Geysers Rd. and Hwy 175.

So I headed up there Friday. Left home at 12 and got back home at 6 (stopped a few times). Great day-trip.

Nearly zero traffic once past St Helena. The Western side of the loop was super-tight and twisty, lots of "tree tunnels" and up/down switchbacks.
The Eastern side is more open and flowing as you head back down-valley. Great views everywhere.

A great alternative to the usual Lake Berryessa loop! Highly recommended. Thanks again to Bill for posting.

Old Lawley Toll Rd.??? Wow a road I don't know of!

And they fixed the white fences on Butts Road, they were all melted, I took some picks but they all turned out blurred. BUT they were really cool to see.

Great, glad you guys enjoyed the ride. Here's another route in the same area you might not have tried. But Mt Veeder Rd has construction delays right now so substitute Dry Creek Rd off Redwood Rd. heading out of Napa:

Yeah, I hate that crappy plastic fence and secretly laugh when I see it melted by fire. And yes they replaced it all, but now there are three sections where cars ran off the road and mowed down sections! It's amazing how people can't manage to keep their car on the road on a straight, low traffic road with no intersections.
