One more ride over Reiff Rd. before winter rains

After many days of smoky skies and unbreathable air, Thursday morning presented an invitation I couldn't refuse - clean cool air and beautiful clouds, perfect for a nice dual sport ride through Capay Valley and over Reiff road.

Link to google map of route

Passing by Lake Solano and through farmland north of Winters, the scenery looked vibrant without the recent smoky haze. Just for fun I tried out an HDR setting on the next two shots...

...and some shooting while riding.

As I turned off Hwy 16 and crossed the "zero ton" bridge I was grinning like a fool in anticipation of the fun ride ahead.

Climbing the rocky trail I saw redbud leaves showing off some early fall color, but had to stay alert to obstacles and the almost sheer drop off. Still, it was hard not to take in the trail side views.

Partway up the climb I came to the infamous slide that closed the path during the heavy spring rains. But thanks to some good folks it's now easily passable by bike or ATV.

Once past the slide it was easy going up to the summit, which rewarded with spectacular views.

Then it was time to enjoy a nice downhill to Davis Reservoir and a lunch stop.

continued next post....

....continued

Nearing the reservoir the road smooths out, time to experiment with shooting the dust cloud behind me.

Overcast made the reservoir area look drab, so I thought black & white might show off the textures and shapes best. I enjoyed my sandwich and the quiet while letting my eyes wander the landscape. I had not seen another soul since leaving Hwy 16. Yay for mid-week riding!

The climb up from the reservoir is just rocky and steep enough to deliver some mild dual sport jollies without any serious obstacles.

Near the top the main feature is scorched manzanita bushes, standing like stick figures after a wildfire a couple years ago. Again, black and white captures the feeling.

Reaching Morgan Valley Road I head south toward Berryessa Knoxville Rd., the bike showing off the other half of it's "dual" sport nature as it eats up smooth pavement.

Incredibly I had still not seen another vehicle since leaving Hwy 16, and would not until nearing Hwy 128. Berryessa Knoxville was all mine.

Finally Lake Berryessa greets me with blue skies, nice clouds and wind whipped water.

Turning onto Hwy 128 I know from watching fire maps that last week's huge Atlas fire has burned both sides of the road just ahead. Still, the devastation is shocking and sickening.

As I near home the clouds offer hope for a change of seasons and an end to the fire season. I count myself lucky, and spoiled, that I've only been inconvenienced by closures of some favorite riding roads and the fires only came within 8 miles of my home. So many others were not so lucky.

Bill, love your reports. I was feeling a bit stressed today but reading your comments with those beautiful photos has put me in a calm quiet place.

Thanks John, it is fun to experiment with new techniques, as long as I don't drop the camera! I am using a wrist strap, so far so good.

Enjoyed the ride. Just enough rain to settle the dust. Road might be ready for another trip.

... the on bike shots are cool,
but I was thinking of the
shots that look like the camera
is off the bike using a timer ...
that's dedication for you!

... interesting how the off-bike pics of
you riding bring
the viewer of a solo rr into
the trip in a different way ... fun ...

Yeah, those are fun when I get the timing right. The camera has a setting to take 5 shots in succession after a 10 second delay. Seems easy enough to count to 10 but it took three tries riding over the slide to get me in the picture. Dedication? Maybe, but I felt kinda silly!

Nice. Did you splash through any streams on Knoxville-Berryessa?

Thanks Rod, the crossings are all dry except for a trickle in the northernmost one.

Thanks Blankpage, that's just what I was seeing when composing that shot. Farmland offers a unique combination of man made geometric shapes and natural forms.
