Midsummer Magic 2018 Weaverville RR and pics

Let me bore ya with a little ride report then the pictures.

So, this was my third Weaverville Rally and I (still) wanted to do something different (than all the glorious roads) in the area.
I had tasted a little of the local dirt with Aaron and John last year so decided I’d take the TW200 and explore the dirt roads between Trinity/Lewiston Lakes and Shasta Lake.
I wasn’t really expecting anyone else to be doing dirt at Weaverville so knew I was in this solo. Nothing new there though. Just go prepared and be more careful.
My route was basically take 3 South out of Weaverville about 2 miles to Little Browns Creek road. You take the lower road (Browns Mountain Rd) at the quick Y and it turns to dirt until you get back to the Trinity River and Lewiston Road. Left on Lewiston (paved) to Trinity Dam Blvd. Turn Left and go to Stop Intersection with Hatchery Road.
Also to the immediate right is Deadwood Rd, which turns to dirt quickly. Follow this Along Deadwood creek which was flowing and had nice lush vegetation around. Even small pools.
At the end of Deadwood stay left and turn left onto Eastside Rd then quickly right onto County Line Rd. Follow this great wide open double track dirt road for miles along ridges to get to Trinity Mountain Rd. Turn right and enjoy this very twisty paved section of road with no centerlines. Even a few miles of freshly laid pavement. Wonderful reprieve from the miles of dirt.
Follow this pavement south past Nawa Acadamey and turn left onto E. Fork Rd. More Dirt!
On the map you will pass the following… FIRST SOUTH FORK EAST FORK CLEAR CREEK, then, NORTH FORK EAST FORK CLEAR CREEK, then, SECOND SOUTH FORK EAST FORK CLEAR CREEK, then, THIRD SOUTH FORK EAST FORK CLEAR CREEK.
I was like… WTF is with those names?
Found out each of these is a small tributary into Clear Creek. Back to these in a awhile…
At the last one there is a right turn onto Whiskeytown Shasta Trinity NRA road. This leads into Shasta Chappie OHV area as Trail 1 (Easy/Green) and is the main (doubletrack) dirt road to Shasta Dam. My destination!
At this point I was about 45 miles or so into the ride with another 10 – 12 to get to Shasta Dam. Within a couple miles I passed a temp sign that said the road was washed out and impassable in 10 miles.
No way. I’m going on.

In a couple more miles I passed a 2 truck Forest Service crew (about 15 guys or so in two squads) who were cutting brush along the road and stacking it into 3-4 foot piles along the road. I later saw 3-4 foot burnt rings and figured that one out.
Continuing on a few more miles I saw no fresh tracks in the dirt road, until I ran across a double set of footprints. One track going each way.For a couple of miles.
The road started getting steeper down and more and more washed out with large ruts. I passed a few tricky sections hoping to see this total washout but finally decided it was to risky to continue (by myself). I was at 52 miles so knew I was close. Oh well. Maybe next time I can get thru.

Remember the different CLEAR CREEK FORKS on my way up?
I backtracked back past the working FS crews and down to the FIRST SOUTH FORK EAST FORK CLEAR CREEK where I found it was also a small posted mining claim with a small bench and moderate small water hole to wade in to refresh and eat lunch.
I was here about 30 – 40 minutes when I started hearing aircraft buzzing around to the west. First airplanes then helicopters. Not good.
Then a few “clouds” went over the sun and cast a dingy brown shade. Not good.
Then first one then the other Forest Service Crew trucks (that were clearing brush) came hauling down the dirt road.
I wrapped up my lunch stuff and headed back west. As I went around one turn I saw the fire on top of a ridge straight ahead of me. Just to the north and west of French Gulch. I could see the command plane circling well above the fire and directing the helicopters and medium sized fire retardant planes to the fire.
Took a couple pictures then continued on into French Gulch. A lot of the locals were hanging downtown watching the fire on the ridge above as more fire trucks hauled ass through.
Just outside the south side of French Gulch turn right on French Gulch Rd and enjoy a GREAT dirt road back to Deadwood road and backtrack to the beginning from here. (Trinity Dam Rd to Lewiston Rd to Browns Mtn Rd to 3 & the Weave).

96 miles total.
Had a jack rabbit pace my front tire for about 30 yards. Also saw a kit fox, a black bear, lots of squirrels and a few deer.

Here’s some pics…

It was getting late (3’ish) and I wasn’t sure how much time it would take to get back from French Gulch so I boogied. I did want to party and set up for the evening as well as hit some pool time.

Here’s some pic’s from the 49’er…

That’s it for my event pics.

I also noticed a Bald Eagle soaring around and saw where it’s nest was. On top of some high voltage electrical towers.
There’s the towers way over there… dead center in pic.

OP,thanks for the ride report and more importantly, that you don't need a 500 lb. bike to explore off road......

John, Thanx for the bar/machinery and pix. You got me eyeing a snow cone machine. The mango & spiced rum snow cone was delish.

Sad to say that many of the pic's from my Kayak day on Whiskeytown may be the last time in a long time that you'll see tree's there.
The Carr fire started the day after we left.
Just above Carr Power station seen in a couple of my pic's.
It is still growing and has now killed 5 people and destroyed over 500 buildings.
